Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Mar 24, 2014 12:43 pm What are the standards / precautions for covering up brickwork during rain? Is it necessary? We've had rain on and off for the past few weeks. The bricks are being layed during the sunny days, and then in the arvo/next day there is a downpour. I've also noticed what looks like white paint washed down the bricks (not sure if this is normal). And the colour of the mortar is different in different areas of the brickwork. (We've opted for off-white) Im not sure this is something I need to bring up with the builder. Re: Bricklaying during rain 2Mar 25, 2014 10:01 pm No, they should not lay bricks in rain, it does not strengthen the mortar, it weakens it as it washes off cement, creates efflorescence and you will end up with uneven brick lines and uneven colour in mortar. That would be if the bricks were being laid with the rain actually washing across them. Most houses I've seen getting bricked up have been ones with a roof over the top of them, and I doubt any brickie worth his salt would be laying up bricks on the exposed side of the house with rain lashing on to it. Re: Bricklaying during rain 4Mar 26, 2014 9:45 am I guess it depends where you are and what type of house. In WA most are double brick so there would not be a roof when the bricks are bing laid. I think all responders are correct with their statements but it depends on the situation at the time. If you are doubtful get a building inspector to look at the bricks. Re: Bricklaying during rain 5Mar 26, 2014 9:53 am Good point Mark, I was only thinking for my particular situation of a brick veneer house that already has a the roof on top. +1 to the building inspector suggestion. Re: Bricklaying during rain 7Mar 28, 2014 12:07 am OP clearly said bricks were being laid on the sunny days with rain in between. Bricklaying in rain should be avoided or fully covered. Rain may not always fall vertically, but it doesn't always fall horizontally ! I really would like to think that nearly all brickies have a few brains, and not put up bricks and mortar on the side of the house where the rain is actually impacting the freshly laid bricks. I'm sure that if they were being laid on that side, they'd be using tarps or other ways of obstructing direct impact from the rain. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. I guess I was thinking what I would do in that situation, and didn't think some people are less concerned than I'd be. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld.
