Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Aug 02, 2013 1:22 pm I would like some advice on what may have caused the metal edging to corrode (only on the edges) and what can be done about it? We are in contact with the company we purchased the edging from and they are sending out a rep but I would like some advice as i don't want to start the buck passing game. The bathroom is completely tiled now and the corrosion started after the tiles were in. We have not used the bathroom at all. There is no running water or electricity yet. The tiler said he has not seen anything like it before. Please help. Re: Help, metal edging corroding 2Aug 02, 2013 5:01 pm Not sure what type of metal you mean, what does the corrosion look like? Corrosion could be chemical, like brick acid, or galvanic, for example aluminium being close to copper with moisture present. Post a pic. I'm not sure if the tiler used the wrong products or the edging is faulty. Im not looking forward to the ducking and weaving on this one! http://i1283.photobucket.com/albums/a54 ... 26cfa5.jpg Re: Help, metal edging corroding 4Aug 02, 2013 9:29 pm I can't quite tell from the photo but it looks like an Aluminium extrusion. If so it resembles pitting corrosion, possibly caused by a scatch or score with grout or tile dust left in it. It can sometimes be polished out but is often unsuccessful in the long term as even a small amount of corrosion product left within the pit can re-activate the "cell". The only surefire way to cure it would be to replace the strip. Re: Help, metal edging corroding 5Aug 02, 2013 10:00 pm Thanks, if so is it a fault of the tiler or the product itself? of the 7 edges we have it has occurred extensively on 5 of them. The "Pitting" has also moved onto the grout. To replace the edging means to rip all the tiles off the returns, nib walls and feature wall. An expensive venture if no one takes responsibility! Re: Help, metal edging corroding 6Aug 02, 2013 10:48 pm Not really the tiler's fault, it's very difficult to pin the origin of something naturally occuring. It may not have happened if the tiler had been more careful & cleaned the edging off immediately but, then again, it may have happened anyway. Irrespective of who may/may not have caused it, it's the builder's responsibility to remedy it. Re: Help, metal edging corroding 7Aug 02, 2013 11:36 pm Raw aluminium should never come into contact with wet mortar, I think the grout will have a similar composition. Your aluminium would appear to be clear lacquered, I think minor damage, or poor coating, has caused the coating to break down. I agree, it's the builder's problem. It could be that there are steel nails or screws under the tiles which would accelerate the corrosive effect through galvanic action while the grout was fresh.
