Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Jul 18, 2013 2:49 pm g'day, I need urgent help to determine if this is a structure related issue. The whirly got blown off the colour bond roof this afternoon, leaving a hole right next to the ridge caping. It is fairly windy here in melbourne and looks like the storm is coming. My house is about 2 years old, obviously builder will only responsible for structure related problem after 12 months maintenance period. Would this be still considered as structure issue so that I can ring up the builder and get them to fix it? Do you have the whirly bird and can you make out how it was attached to the roof?? Hopefully you can find that it wasn't attached properly and you can go down this path. Whether or not it was windy is another matter. Then if can also go down the plumbing board direction and hold the plumber responsible. Re: Whirly bird got blown off roof this afternoon. 3Jul 19, 2013 6:19 pm Thanks B Star, you're probably right, 3 roof screws were holding the thing in place. I suspect the spinning thing was never balanced, the vibration caused the screws to be loosened. Anyway all sorted. Rang builder right afterward, they ahh mmh a bit and said no one will be able to come out at that time. Suggested I ring SES. I did as suggested, 2 SES trucks rocked up to my place, after checking around they said the only thing they can do is to say sorry, 8m high tin roof, windy and raining, there is nothing they can do, definitely not going up the roof. They then gathered together and discussed a bit, suggested they can look at the roof cavity and see if there is anything they can do. At the end they placed a very large plastic sheet right under the hole to catch the water but said it needs to be removed as soon as possible. The SES crew consists of gentlemen and ladies, half of them obviously are new to it, one of the old guy seems to be the leader, he explained to me what he was going to do and explained to the crew what he just did afterward and why he did it that way, very professional, he even took off the gloves while removing the manhole cover and explained that to the team members why - so it won't mark or dirty the cover. What a wonderful teacher and the crew members are all lovely. kids were so excited seeing that many orange colour people around the house, my son said they're transformers. Builder's roof plumber came this morning, bent and twisted the thing a bit and put it back on to temporarily stop the water getting in to the roof cavity, they admitted it's a bit d0dgy and needs to be replaced. I'll give builder a couple of weeks. They haven't responded to my repeated requests as to when the roof plumbers will be back to replace it. Hopefully I don't have to go down the justice department route again.
