Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Jul 15, 2012 10:14 am Hey, I am currently in the process of buying a Colorbond Shed and I am worried about the materials being supplied for the roof. I was led to believe that the standard thickness was 0.42 mm but the compnay I am dealing with is quite adamant that 0.35mm will be adequate. The roof won't have any solar panels or anything like that and is not in an area that recieves zero snowfall. Any ideas or suggestions would be handy. Cheers Re: Colorbond Roofing 2Jul 16, 2012 10:22 pm I've never heard of .35mm sheet. Is it an imported product? @builderforlife Building inspector and passionate about construction When you need an expert to take a look. Re: Colorbond Roofing 4Jul 17, 2012 6:32 pm 0.35mm BMT is available from Lysaght on request (see note here under the Specifications tab) but is designed for use as walling, not roofing. Have a look at Lysaght's Walling Solutions manual ... page 4 states that the 0.35mm BMT profile is called WallClad (as opposed to Custom Orb for the 0.42mm and 0.48mm BMT profiles), and Page 19 states "Lysaght WallClad is identical to the Custom Orb profile but is 0.35mm BMT and is exclusively used for walling applications". (emphasis mine) I'd just be pointing the shed supplier to that clause and asking them for their written certification from Lysaght for the use of WallClad in a non-walling application. Just for general information, the terms of interest here are BMT (base metal thickness), TCT (total coated thickness) and TPT (total painted thickness). Have a look at Bluescope's link here which has a nice diagram depicting the different terms. It's not uncommon in the shed construction industry for builders to quote "0.42mm thick Colorbond sheeting" or similar, and then supply 0.42mm TPT (0.35mm BMT + coating + paint) instead of 0.42mm BMT. You do have to keep an eye on them. I plan on installing an undercover walkway (awning ??) from my carport to the back door as shown in sketch. From everyone's experience, what would you install? Timber lapped and capped OR colorbond? Thank you. 0 2963 |
