Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Mar 20, 2012 1:56 pm Hi all Had PCI yesterday, inspector brought up a few issues. Apparently tiles grouted\filled with silicon are supposed to be 3mm apart, but none of our tile work is. I had a quick look on the building commission site, but where can I find the standards for these things? The alfresco, garage and porch ceilings are all plasterboard (not blueboard) - inspector suggested that this will be a problem in the future as well, due to dampness. Any feedback? If this has been used in your area it will be fine for damp areas. Re: Plasterboard use outside and tile gaps with silicon 3Apr 19, 2012 9:37 pm I agree with foc1 wet area plasterboard used for thise soffits will be fine. Tile gaps are set by the thickness of the tile, consult your tile shop for more. The main problem is tile gaps that are too small. The trendy look of 1.5mm gaps gives the tiles no room for movement. @builderforlife Building inspector and passionate about construction When you need an expert to take a look. Re: Plasterboard use outside and tile gaps with silicon 4Sep 23, 2014 9:57 pm Hi cookie_monster, Even wet area plasterboard has problems in Porches and possibly garages also at the joints. The paint system must seal the joints adequately for starters. Also the entire ceiling is at risk at each fixing also for the same reason. So ask plasterboard manufacturer only for this advice I suggest. You'll need a technical rep. About the wall tiling it's the junction joints that are hardly ever done right. These need to be 3mm minimum and silicone sealed I suggest. Again see plasterboard bathroom or wet area details on the internet and you'll see for yourself. The last 22 building consultants whose reports I saw missed both garage ordinary plasterboard installations failing and these wall tile joints incorrectly done in their reports... so not many get it right.
