Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Mar 03, 2010 5:52 pm Hi, We're about to move into our newly completed house and I am/was planning to build a timber deck for the alfresco area which will also run along the back of the house so you can step out from the bedroom and rumpus room onto the deck. All up the deck will be about 55 m2. I'm building in the Ipswich City Council area and after speaking with them...although I could use the term pulling teeth they have advised that I will need to get approval as the deck is great then 10m2 (which is rediculous) The issue I will have is that the house is a low set brick house and they advised that the clearance from the lowest timber member to the ground needs to be 450mm. How can I overcome this issue without creating a huge water pit under the deck or having to insert ag pipe for drainage. The alfresco area will be undercover but either side of that will be exposed. How do these display homes get away with building these floating decks that sit on the ground or just above it? Re: Deck clearance 2Mar 05, 2010 7:50 am If the subfloor timber is H4 grade then the clearance height shouldn't be an issue. 10m2 is fairly standard with most councils. PM me if you still not sure 450mm is the standard to allow a person to access the underside of the deck for maintenance/cleaning/access. That means from the ground to the underside of the bearer.
