Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Apr 11, 2011 7:50 pm Our current gas storage hot water system is currently housed what could generously be described as a shack on the back veranda. Essentially someone has put some posts into the ground, nailed them to the veranda roof joists and slapped some weatherboards on the outside - no internal cladding, no floor, daylight between the gaps in the boards. So because it has a roof and walls of sorts, an indoor unit was installed back in the day and that's all fine. Now because this shack is useless and taking up space we want to knock those weatherboards off and claim back the veranda but we're not sure what we should replace the HWS with and whether it can be in the same place. All the HWS installation manuals just say to refer to AS 5061 when installing but I can't find too much on what that contains other than 300mm clear of eaves. Logically, I wouldn't think an indoor unit would be appropriate as potentially the HWS could be exposed to outdoor elements like rain coming in under the veranda. But can an outdoor hot water system be installed with a tin or polycarbonate veranda roof above it? Or am I going to have to find another location altogether and run more copper? Re: Hot water service - on veranda? 2Apr 11, 2011 9:08 pm Its not quite the same as you but we have a outside gas boosted solar hot water service, The gas boosted unit is an instantaneous unit with the top around 1m below the roof This has been operating under a tin roof on our veranda for the last five years. We had building permit inspections when we built the verandah and we have the had the unit serviced and no one has indicated there are any problems. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get !
