Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Jan 30, 2011 7:52 am Hi All, I am a 36 year old Female in need of input. I am going to build a Pole & Beam Home using trees off my bush block and I am NOT convinced on the standard 'concreting in the pole method' due to knowing water can eventually get between the concrete and pole and cause rot. Researching has told me that Poles can be coated with bitumen...does this stop it though? My thoughts were to cover the Pole with either timber grease or sump oil (not sure I'm allowed by council) to stop water penetrating the Pole, ram the posts in at 850mm deep on and surrounded by road base (gravel mix used for bitumin rd) because of its ability to drain as well as compact nicely, then box up around the Pole (400mm deep 250mm wide box), leaving 100mm of road base between Pole and boxing, then using metal brackets bolt Pole to concrete surround footing! I would love to know what people think, would council pass this construction method? Patreen Re: House Poles..Methods of ground installation? 2Jan 30, 2011 8:12 am If you are going to have a house on top of the poles with decent eaves and the ground sloped away from the house for 1m where is the water going to come from? If its groundwater your way of doing things will make it easier for the ground water to get to the poles and make it much harder to construct. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: House Poles..Methods of ground installation? 4Jan 30, 2011 9:08 am The standard concrete approach is fine. Just use a good preservative use a couple of coats. Also make sure the concrete is good quality 25Mpa if getting ready mixed. Or make sure you mix it properly preferably with a small mixer if you are doing it yourself and compact it with a concrete poker vibrator. A good quality concrete well compacted is waterproof. Remember they makes pipes and build dams with this stuff. Stand the pole on a brick at the bottom of the hole so you get the concrete under the bottom as well as the sides. Re: House Poles..Methods of ground installation? 7Jan 30, 2011 9:37 am Awesome Bashworth..I understand what your saying, I can now forget all the other that was consuming me and driving me bonkas. Just Checked your sight...Great stuff! Is 600mm deep enough or fence strainer depth of 900mm....over kill can't hurt can it!? Re: House Poles..Methods of ground installation? 8Jan 30, 2011 9:47 am Bashing poles into the ground is a good idea for vineyards. but don't you think that risk of whiteants & rot would be more extreme? Hey I am a beginner at this it was just an idea. Where you are coming from is where you are going to... Re: House Poles..Methods of ground installation? 9Jan 30, 2011 9:55 am Beginner myself onc_artisan, we will learn together, ta! We don't have whiteants in Tassie that I am aware and rot is definately my greatest concern. What Bashworth has sugested is certainly going to go a long way in preventing any rot and certainly give the strength I am after when I take wind, rain, rot etc in to consideration. I want to build once and build right! Re: House Poles..Methods of ground installation? 10Jan 30, 2011 9:58 am Oh Tassie... well that explains it. Re: House Poles..Methods of ground installation? 11Jan 30, 2011 10:00 am It hard to give the best answer on depth as I don't know the structure, ground conditions etc If you are going for council approval why not submit with 600mm depth and increase to 900 if the council ask/suggest. Re: House Poles..Methods of ground installation? 14Feb 12, 2011 8:15 pm Hi Patreen, I am in Tassie and thinking of doing the same thing! (though for a shed to live in temporarily while my house is built). I've been researching it a bit and the general consensus (mostly from US sources) is: paint end of pole with roofing tar, put in post hole that has a bit of concrete poured in at bottom, then fill around with gravel/sand mixture. I am a bit unsure of how to attach the floor and roof to the poles though! Would be good to share info re the pole building thing - my email is mimaranda@yahoo.com if you want to get in touch.
