Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Nov 18, 2010 11:08 am [img]Hi all, We've just started our build and are at the roof frame stage. The construction is double brick and tile. There are two 7 metre length metal roof beams that have been recently installed over the living area. One of the large metal roof beams that spans the living area is supported on one side by two (approx 30cm) vertical lengths of pine extending from the corner of the pantry wall. Refer to the attached photos. I would expect a metal beam of this size to be supported by a brick wall? The other metal beam wasn't the right length so it's had a 1metre or so section of metal welded on to increase the length. On the other side it is supported at a wall edge, see photo. This doesn't look right, would you agree? http://s1180.photobucket.com/albums/x418/Bpuppet/Home/ Re: Metal roof beam problems - please comment? 3Nov 18, 2010 9:00 pm Im no engineer but that doesnt look right at all. Do you have access to the engineers drawings, send some photos to the engineer to see their reaction. Also does you specification mention structral steelwork to be protected, eg paint? All of the steel is either too short or high. Im hoping more than plasterboard will be bracing the steel over the pantry. Re: Metal roof beam problems - please comment? 4Nov 19, 2010 11:05 am Thank you for your reply. I've emailed my concerns to our CLO. They have replied saying that the brickwork should have been taken up another 3 courses to match the height of the opposing wall. And that the brickies will be returning to correct this and complete the remaining 3 courses. So that's good news. I don't have the engineers contact details otherwise I would be contacting them as well. I also have my concerns that the length of these beams are not sufficient. The final photo shows the other beam in the living area. It rests on the end of a wall, which would be placing a lot of weight on a small area. I would have expected this to extend further, thereby distributing the weight on a larger surface. In all the documents I've signed I haven't found any specifications about whether these metal beams will be painted. Is the painting of metal roof beams standard practice? Hello everyone, After some suggestions and ideas about how to put a concrete path around the drop edge beam area on our new build. We are required to have a concrete path… 0 12860 The distance between my DEBs varies from 4.1m at the narrowest to 8.1m at the widest. 5 27281 |
