Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Oct 04, 2010 8:26 pm Hi, I am after some help regarding mortar not being very consistant.. It has come to my attention after the bricks were cleaned that the mortar colour varies alot. The mortar used was natrual and looks grey and off white in different sections most of the time its within a couple of bricks away of eachother, its very noticable and wondering how to resvole this problem, builder says not to stress and that over some good weather colouring differences will become less visable. Also there are parts where the mortar has become stained which i was told its from the acid after cleaning the bricks. I would like to hear if this problem is known and if its usual for this to occur. And the best way to go about it. http://i1188.photobucket.com/albums/z40 ... I dunno about the good weather excuse, I don't notice weird looking mortar on houses on bad weather days??? It should look good every day of the year. geez if we waited for good weather in melbourne for our houses to look good we'd be waiting a while! having said that about ours, our mortar is off white, not natural. maybe someone else with some natural mortar can share their experience? We are getting that and I'm not sure what colour it will turn out. I think I told our consultant I wanted off white and they said that was natural colour so we got that, now after a bit of searching around I don't think it's what we want, but your mortar looks good...we'll the lighter bits anyway Re: Help:Need advice, Mortar Problems.. pics attatched 8Dec 03, 2014 8:07 am It looks to me like the mortar wasn't mixed enough to start with or they have used too strong a mix ( too much cement ) especially in the second picture. Off white cement if there is too much in a mortar mix will actually look a lot greyer than normal. Compounding the problem is that the knucklehead that acid- washed the bricks looks like he has also used too strong a water/acid mix. Stewie Re: Help:Need advice, Mortar Problems.. pics attatched 10Dec 08, 2014 9:42 pm In the second photo, on the top course, the mortar looks inconsistent. I've found in the past that brickies or their labourers don't always give the mortar enough time in the mixer to blend all the sand and cement to a smooth paste resulting in small lumps of cement in the mix. If it was mixed properly, the colour of the joins would be more even not blotchy despite them having being acid washed as well. It wouldn't be the first time I've seen " rainbow " mortar on a job.
