Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Sep 30, 2010 3:25 pm Hi, I am new to this forum, so please bear with me! I am wondering if anyone out there in cyberspace has had a similar problem to ours. We are building a new home in Medowie, outside of Newcastle. The house is about 3/4 finished. We went to have a look at it on Wednesday and were horrified to see that our beautiful coffered ceiling in the open plan living/dining area has four rather ugly expansion joints running from the wall to each edge of the coffer, about 680 mm in length. Then the cornice has been cut through with about a 3mm gap in it to match each expansion joint. We contacted our site manager who had a look at it himself, then rang us back and told us the engineer had requested the expansion joints be inserted as the ceiling is so large and would be prone to cracking. The room size is 4.9m x 9.5m. I immediately emailed our liaison officer who took the problem to the construction manager - he is now in charge of it, apparently, and will get back to us within a couple of days. I'm not good at waiting! I have searched the internet looking for a ceiling with expansion joints in it and cannot find anything. I can't believe that we weren't told this would happen when we had our plans drawn up, there are no markings on the plan to indicate that the joints were to be put in. If it has happened because of the coffer, then we would have chosen a "normal" ceiling. The joints and the cuts in the cornices have certainly spoilt the look of the room as a whole - has anyone had a similar experience? If so, is there any way we can correct the problem or hide it in some way? Looking forward to hearing from someone out there! Re: Expansion Joints in Coffered Ceiling 2Oct 01, 2010 9:29 am Having never heard of a coffered ceiling before I did a bit of googling. I would think that if any expansion joints are needed they could be very easily hidden behind the dropped beam sections. For the size of the room that you are talking about I do not see why you would need any expansion joints. Also the coffering would make the ceiling stiffer and hence less likely to suffer overall expansion. Each element of the roof should have sufficient flex to avoid any cracking. I have installed villaboard before, in a laundry. I think I did… 0 7480 How do you remove one of these ceiling air con vents? And is it possible to disconnect the duct joined to the vent from inside the house, without going into the roof cavity? 0 5947 There is water getting into the ceiling, I expected to find some holes in the corrugated roof but there weren't any so I suspect that the roof drip edge is letting water… 0 2454 |
