Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Sep 25, 2010 7:38 pm Just curious, has anybody's builder done this? I just saw them on my place today, the columns are about 300mm diameter. Obviously there is a steel structural post hidden in the middle of the casing. I've never seen PVC pipe used for columns before and they have even used foam/polystyrene astragals (band at top and bottom of column). It just looks so cheap, light and fragile, not painted yet. The foam astragal (has thin epoxy coating to create a thin shell) on the ground will no doudt get damaged over time. The PVC pipe is already cracked at the top and theres a hole in it now too, but they will probably repair it. I have only ever seen compressed fibre cement used for columns before, not this crap...
