Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Jun 01, 2010 9:17 am Hi everyone, I'm just about to scribble my plans and I'm trying to figure out the meassurements. I wondered if there is a website or a place where I can get the standard sizes/dimensions for windows, doors, kitchens, staircases etc from? Thank you in advance! If you visit a website of a lerger manufacturer, you can see all the measurements in their brochures. (A&L Windows or Dowell Windows spring to mind). They code them as Height by Width. For example, an 1809 windows is 1800mm high by 900mm wide OR a 2124 window is 2100mm high by 2400mm wide. Doors come in standard sizes of 520mm, 620mm, 720mm, 820mm, 870mm, 920mm, 970mm & 1020mm. The most common being 820mm. Visit corinthians webiste for a lot of info on this. Better yet, call them and ask them to send you a retail price book (tell them you are a hardware shop employee or owner builder to avoid too many questions). Some doors are only available in some sizes. Keep in mind though, you can have a door made in any size you want but you will pay a premium for it. Kitchens are a completely different story. Benchtops tend to be at least 600mm (and usually are exactly 600mm in most of the bigger builders homes) from the wall to the front edge but island benches are usually at least 750mm or 900mm (incl. overhang). You need to take into account your sink width, oven depth and stove width. Your best bet is to have a look at some builders designs to get an idea of what you want and how the products all tie in together. the more standard your design (or the more efficient) the cheaper it can be. That said and as with the doors, anything can be done if you are prepared to pay for it. Dont forget your bench height from the floor either. This tends to be 1200mm as a general rule but again; anything can be designed. With dish drawers and double ovens becoming more prevalent, designs are changing. There are references to minimum allowances in the building codes of Australia (BCA) an in particular to door widths however if you follow the standard sizing above, you will not run into trouble. Staircases are more complex as there are minimum heights for and widths for treads(300mm) and risers (120mm) but you are best to speak to a manufacturer or designer if you are unsure. They can give you ideas on feasibility, not just the measurements as there are other considerations such as no more than 4 winders can be used in a staircase the turns less than 90 degrees. If you have any specific questions, dont hesitate to ask however I would suggest that you get a copy of the BCA as there is no one reference point for all the info you seek. If you're building in WA the window sizes are generally in brick dimensions. Jason windows has a pdf they could send you. OK it's been a little while!
