Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Apr 21, 2010 5:54 pm Hi! We are building at the moment and our bricks have been laid with the mortar incorrectly done as flush rather than the rolled that we requested. It seems they have done the front of the house flush, which is ok as it will be rendered. One side of the house has been done rolled and the other two sides are flush (these two sides are NOT rendered) As you can imagine my hubby is ropeable and spoke to the bricky yesterday on site who originally said that the flush sides would need to be knocked down and done again. Now today hubby went back and spoke to the building supervisor and he admitted it was wrong and that it could be fixed without knocking the walls down. He said he would get the bricky to grind the mortar back and then re mortar and roll it. The bricky was not happy about this.... I imagine this is a lot of work on a 50 square home! But for you brickies, is this option a good idea? Is this going to make my mortar more susceptible to cracking and crumbling later on? Is it going to leave the brickwork sound? Or do we demand that the affected walls be taken down and rebuilt? The other option is to leave it flush and make the rolled side flush and we would be compensated. I dont really like the flush look on my bricks so I think that the only compensation I would take wiuld be for the house to be fully rendered. What do you all think? Re: ANY BRICKIES OUT THERE....HELP!! 2Apr 22, 2010 2:52 pm I think it is too late to make the rolled side flush as the mortar may come out at a later date. Regarding the grinding they would only take out about a 3rd of the mortar. My concern would be how will they take out the mortar without damaging the bricks?? Re: ANY BRICKIES OUT THERE....HELP!! 3Apr 25, 2010 12:26 am The quickest way to fix this problem is the grinder. This is what they did to our house when brick units were too close, they just grind the front of the bricks a bit and push in a bit of mortar, and yes they damaged the bricks above and below. This is not allowable but it makes it look to be up to standard. Here is a link to some crap brick pics http://s677.photobucket.com/albums/vv132/zaphod373/ Good luck i had the my concreters concrete right up to the fence. I have pits all along my path, so the water tends to drain away from the house and into the pits.
