Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Mar 05, 2010 12:08 pm Hi, We had an ecosmart solar hot water system installed by a plumber. Ecosmart wanted the system installed with an 8 degree incline to allow the thermal cycling effect to work. The plumber thinks they dont know anything, and installed it on a 0 degree. Does anyone know if we will have any problems? The water seems to heat ok, but it also has an electrical booster. Anyone know who may be right? Steve Re: Ecosmart says solar heat mounted 8 degrees plumber rekon 2Mar 05, 2010 12:21 pm I wouldn't be accepting in installation outside of the manufactors recommendation! Not only is this likely to void the warrantly, but the manufactors test the units and make recommendations for a reason. ~W~ Building our forever home - Lilium Estate Clyde - Land due May 2019 Built our first home - Pakenham - 2011 Re: Ecosmart says solar heat mounted 8 degrees plumber rekon 3Mar 05, 2010 12:44 pm We've just been looking into solar hot water. I remembered reading (perhaps right here on HomeOne) that there was some detail that can be overlooked which results in a solar system relying totally on the booster to work. When we asked about the possibility of such a thing we were told that the syphoning effect which works on the principle of heat rising needs the system to be installed slightly crooked, otherwise it would all be in balance and nothing would move. Hope I've got that right and have explained it adequately. Who installed it, an installation sub-contractor or literally a plumber who does all kinds of plumbing? Can you turn the booster off and see if the water stays hot? (I probably should add do it when you're expecting sunny days, and don't expect an instant result as the tank is insulated and will hold the warmth for a while.) Re: Ecosmart says solar heat mounted 8 degrees plumber rekon 4Mar 05, 2010 3:09 pm Thanks for the replies. Yep - thats exactly how it describes it in the manual. A mere 8 degree's!! Ecosmart have sent through the installation details again (plumber kept the first copy), and yes, the 8 degree's is required for the thermosiphon effect to work. In part its our fault for going with a tradie. At least garrett finally knows what we have been putting up with for the last decade. Looks like a busy weekend again. bugga.
