What if it was a brick veneer house, how can articulation joints be removed after bricking (if they can)?! My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Brick Mortar 24Feb 27, 2010 9:38 pm Casa2 My application is that there was an internal articulation joint placed when there should be none. Now I'm looking for a way to link the two wall halves. why would you do that? there joined anyway with pins or Brick ties Re: Brick Mortar 28Mar 12, 2010 1:37 pm Casa2 So 6:1 and detergent is sounding very bad. Any ideas what will happen over time? the reason they put detergent in the cement is so it stays softer for longer and it's nice towork with (smoother, a little). 6:1 is too weak. (too much sand) 4:1 normally equates to one 20kg cement bag in a mixer and 16 shovels of sand, that's the best. Dishwashing detergent will weaken the mortar and you'll find it falling out of joints in years to come. easily fixed though. before you sell that house, just go and patch all the holes up. Not a good start for a brand new home. Wonder what project builders generally use. Exactly, but what happens in practice (at least in my case) is a different story. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Brick Mortar 36Mar 13, 2010 6:46 pm Not really. It's all down to the bricklayer(s) who get the job. If the Brickie is supplying the sand, he may choose a higher ratio (better for his pocket). I've heard of some supervisors telling brickies to pull down all the walls they've built when they saw the detergent bottle. I was a brickies labourer for 2 years and we used to use it on hot days....but I always mixed 4:1 ratio... Re: Brick Mortar 37Apr 19, 2010 2:15 pm The 6 sand ratio is a compromise between elasticity and compression strength, to allow for movement, less than 6 will reduce the ability to take up movement. Lime is added for workability during placement, but primarily to add a property know as autogenous healing to fix hairline movement cracking, detergent is a non approved additive and reduces the mortar strength dramatically, it does however improve workability, hence its use. if the specification is not met you don't accept it, its that simple, you can have it tested by a independent chemical engineer cheaply. Confiscate the detergent immediately!!! Hi, I am planning to select San Selmo reclaimed original for the fascade of my build.
