Re: Extending Frames to add Eaves 7Feb 18, 2010 1:22 pm ausdesign If I'm reading your post correctly you are saying that the top chord of the truss does not extend out to the eave line. An 'outrigger' can be nail laminated or bolted to the side of the chord to extend out the required distance. This can be done where the trusses have been ordered incorrectly or an error has been made onsite & the tails cut off by mistake. The spliced timber needs to backspan up along the truss a sufficient distance to allow the cantilever to take the load to the eaves line & should really be documented by an engineer or the like to ensure structural capabilities. That is exactly what I mean! Sorry I didn't explain it very well as I don't really know the technical terms. It seems that the builder has extended the chord of the roof truss out to the required length. It seems to overlap by about 1 - 1.5m, which shoudl be sufficient distance to allow the cantilever to take the load. We are asking the SS for some indication that the truss engineers accepted this design change. It seems to me like they ordered the wrong size trusses for this section....
