Does there need to be a minimum requirement of the distance between the front fence and fromt of house? If so, is it set by the state or each local council? I have an existing house and would like to extend the carport - turing it into a double brick garage. I would like to extend the garage towards the front of the property, however am unsure how far I am allowed to extend. Any advice would be appreciated. ResCode (VIC regulations) state the minimum distance is 9m or the average of your neighbours' setback, whichever is the lesser. You can apply for dispensation through your local council. Phone your local council to check the process and the likelihood that a variation would be passed. Like Trinity said you should be able to build up to your neighbours' setback... however in some cases if you have written consent from your adjoining neighbour/s that they dont mind, then you might be able to build infront of their setback. End decision will come down to council's. If there are neighbouring properties then the average setback of those up to a maximum of 9 met. i.e. if neighbouring homes are both setback 10 met you are only required to go to 9 met.
