Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Jan 20, 2010 7:47 pm Hi, Im hoping to use pictures to explain this - hopefully they might explain things without me being biased. We had this solar hotwater system installed today; http://users.tpg.com.au/srkh//nswhell2.JPG The entire tank is held on the roof using two bent up stainless steel straps underneath the tank; Here; http://users.tpg.com.au/srkh//nswhell1.JPG and here http://users.tpg.com.au/srkh//nswhell3.JPG The bolts you can see only go between the cradle and a seating bar, which is not affixed to the roof, only sits there. Would anyone reading this feel comfortable with this fastening technique holding up 500Kgs of hot water on their roof? Is this the case? I went up and took a look. The collector panel's each have a single stainless steel strap underneath them with a single self tapping bolt at the end of the strap that goes into a "tile" roof batten (the new cliplok roofing has new larger battens - the builder left the smaller unused tile battens where they were). The tank sits in a cradle and is attached to the collectors via an aluminium bar. There is also an aluminium bar at the bottom of the collectors. There are no fasteners from any of the bars that go into the roof. Four straps hold the system from slipping. Re: Is this enough to hold a 315 Litre water tank on a roof? 4Jan 22, 2010 6:32 pm So the panels and tank are linked together by straps and there are two screws/bolts that stop the assembly from slipping. I wouldhave been more comfortable with four screws/bolts. What does the manufacturer say? This bar only connedts the tank and collectors together. There are two straps underneath the collectors at the bottom, with a single bolt in each strap going into a batten. There is also two straps "hooked" onto the tank at the top per the photo. I found the installation manual by ecosmart. They show a diagram that has four extra bolts (they call them coach bolts). These extra bolts go through the bar that connects the tank and collector together and go into the purlins of the roof. There are another two coach bolts in the bar at the bottom of the collectors, they too go into the purlins of the roof. Fixing details for the lower bar states you can either use straps or coach bolts. however, it does not give the option for the upper bar, which has no fasteners at all into the roof, and is supported by two only curled up stainless steel straps, which fixes into a batten with a single bolt per strap. As is per usual for many of the past failed RWH regulations, it is probably traceable to a bureaucrat who's ego overrode the need to seek the appropriate expert… 1 1036 yes it does, you've just not understood it. theres a difference. 4 5421 If you can calculate the reasonable charged head from let's say 100mm below the gutter to the top of where the vertical riser's horizontal discharge pipe will be, that… 11 17565 |
