Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Jan 14, 2010 1:31 pm Hello, I am about to start building a hand-rail for a balcony on my house and I want to be sure it is built correctly. The balcony is 2.5m high and it is a concrete pad (on top of our garage). Can anyone direct me to the standards I need to adhere to for NSW? Are they available online? I intend to integrate it with a pergola which is supported on 90x90 treated pine posts and I intend to build the hand rail out of the same timber, and paint it. I want to use pergola stirrups to hold the hand-rail posts in place, secured to the concrete with 10x100mm dynabolts (the same as the pergola). Does any of this ring alarm bells for anyone? I guess what I really need to know is the required hieght of the rail, gaps between everything, size of fixings and so on. I just don't want to build it all and then be told by the council to replace it later on. Re: Balcony Hand Rail - Regulations for DIY (NSW) 2Jan 14, 2010 2:07 pm According to the Building Code it needs to be a minimum of 1m in height, and you should not be able to pass a 125mm sphere between any gaps. If you use wire then there are specific requirements regarding tension and deflection of the wire. Can't help you with fixing size as it really depends on the materials you are using and fixing to.
