But I have to say, your bricks don’t look very even to start with, even so, they did a rough job laying them. I would rather a bit of a wide gap in the mortar than tiny little pieces of brick stuck in there.. ( but I am certainly no expert on bricklaying lol) -Sha Re: mortar? with pics 5Jul 19, 2009 6:43 pm Brickie Zaphod we get it, multiple posts of the same stuff doesnt make it any better or badder 1 post is enough. So do you have a comment about the laying? Sorry to hear you not happy with the work looks a bit average. May I ask on the photos who put the sticker lables with the writing on them. Was this left by you for the brick layer to read? Brickie may be able to inform us what the tolorence is for the mortar gap I think its 6 to15mm for the downward one (forgoten the name of it) that would help too brickie. Check them out anyway. Re: mortar? with pics 13Dec 28, 2009 4:27 pm While not the best layed bricks, I think you have been a bit "picky" In some cases there is not a lot that can be done especially on the brick and a half return.. where they have spread the perps to hit the windows frame.. really the window has been installed incorrectly and no to brickwork in this case. Brickies will usually move these if they have only been tacked in place. I certainly hope you didn't leave those notes for the bricky to find the next day...not a good way to get a tradesman on side. I can tell my subbies if they have done crap work but they have been working for me for years..... Re: mortar? with pics 14Dec 30, 2009 4:59 pm hi striking, the builder would not have pulled down several walls if we were being a bit picky, they would have stated that the brickwork was within the standards and left them alone. The brick and a half problem which you mention, starts at the bottom ok, then gets progressively worse. this has been redone now, and was not caused by the window, which you suggest. It is simple striking, if the work is not within the standards it is a defect and must be brought up to the standards, wouldn't you agree? Re: mortar? with pics 17Jan 04, 2010 9:56 pm Not sure what state you are in but the Victorian Building Commission has the guide on Standards and Tolerances that would be the best place to start any judgement. You can download it here: http://www.buildingcommission.com.au/resources/documents/S+T_GUIDE_07.pdf You will see on Table 3.04 very detailed descriptions on what is acceptable and the 5mm - 15mm rule is pretty much on the money. Builders are people too.... Re: mortar? with pics 18Jan 05, 2010 8:54 pm For sure, it needs to be to the standard, I was just trying to be the devils advocate, I see it so often the people expect perfection when it just isn't the standard. It was difficult to seen the photos and I am sure it looked much worse in real life. keep in mind the standard is only the "minimum" requirement and a goods tradesman and or supervisor would expect far greater.... I have worked hard with my trades over the years to get them to a standard I am happy with. Chris Hi, I am planning to select San Selmo reclaimed original for the fascade of my build.
