Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 May 18, 2009 1:43 am Hi guys, I am planning to install skirting boards at my new house myself. I would like to know can I use no more nails stick on my skirting boards along the wall? Do people usually paint the skirting boards first before they install it and do I need to primer my skirting boards and then paint it? I have bought my mitre box and saw and hopefully when I have gather my information on DIY i am going to prepare and install it next week. Thanks Re: Prepare and installing skirting boards 2May 18, 2009 7:34 am Why do you want to use liquid nails? Is it cement/render walls? If so, then yes, you can at least undercoat/primer the skirting before fitting off, and then give 2 topcoats... How many metres do you have to do? Bunnings has some great pre-primed and undercoated skirting in fj pine... Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! Re: Prepare and installing skirting boards 3May 18, 2009 12:17 pm Should have gone with MDF or F/J pine skirtings if your painting - they come pre-primed. The downside to using liquid nails is you will make a mess of the plasterboard if you ever need to remove them. Re: Prepare and installing skirting boards 4May 18, 2009 8:58 pm My walls are standard bricked wall, the interior walls are cemented and plastered and painted already. So I was told that I could just use liquid nails to stick them on. Do people usually use nails? Re: Prepare and installing skirting boards 5May 19, 2009 7:40 am You can use cement nails to nail to the brick wall, but you need to predrill the skirting, and becareful not to split the skirting as you nail home! Hopefully your walls are straight, but you will need to put some holding pressure on the skirting until the liquid nails goes off... Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... Quite a few have come off very easy Re: Prepare and installing skirting boards 7May 25, 2009 3:10 pm My two cents worth: Not sure what your floor finishes are but..... If youve got carpet...your skirtings are going to cop a hammering from a hoover. If youve got timber...your skirtings are going to cop a hammering from sweeping brushes and mops. Also, your skirtings are the first thing to get hit when moving furniture (beds, bookshelves, etc etc) around in a room. I would be mechanically fixing them (nails/screws)...not glueing. Just a thought, Pat. Building Standards; Getting It Right! Is this acceptable in a new house build. Floors where installed by builder. Already chips in board and skirting is not flush 0 191 Joe Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. If you haven't sorted this already you need to caulk this gap. Not sure where you are but if you are in Sydney I can… 5 4361 |
