In the unlikely event of a break in the pipe and gas ignites then you probably won't have an explosion. Your whole cavity space contains the gas pipes and if there is a leak then the worry is gas mixed with air - then you have an explosion. I have seen a couple of houses totally destroyed in a gas explosion (they were old, very old).
Gas is safe, how about electricity and a steel frame? No that's safe too - actually safer than a timber frame as you have an earth in the frame. Same goes for lightening - safer. Often gas heating has an electric ignition or fan for movement of air so a power outlet is needed nearby. It's abit difficult to tell from the photo. Based on the age of the first post in this thread, there's a good chance the house is finished by now and you will know if the power point had to be moved to the next stud...
