I remember helping my dad dig a trench that deep for a electrical cable from his old house to his shed. It was a pain in the a$$!!! Re: Electrical cable depth in ground 3Nov 15, 2008 2:02 pm I just looked at the plans for our subdivision and ours are at 600mm. From our drawings, its 200mm down, so 400mm above the cable, don't now if its regulations either, but that's what we're getting. Otherwise the conduit needs to be covered by concrete... Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! Otherwise the conduit needs to be covered by concrete... Oh oh....I reckon Ive just had a ******* bit of electrical work then. Ive just had a qualified electrician run a cable from my house to my new garage, in a conduit overhead! It goes from the fascia of my house to the fascia of the garage along a pagola beam that links the two. Hmmmmmmmmmm. Pat. Re: Electrical cable depth in ground 9Nov 19, 2008 6:43 pm You can run cable in conduit above ground. No problem, as long as its UV stabilised and installed within the Australian Standards....
The 600 cover is for underground installation... Electrical Engineer... Don't hold that against me... And keen owner builder... Mainly the building part!! conduit 10Nov 20, 2008 4:57 pm Thanks for that , i will be putting conduit at 600mm underground, just have to organise a trenching contractor as my soil is hard to dig and trench is 20m long.
An above ground installation is no go as i have no where to run conduit that is suitable. Re: Electrical cable depth in ground 11Mar 02, 2009 1:17 pm Yes 600mm and make sure you mark on your meter box where the cable is legal requirement. Re: Electrical cable depth in ground 13May 11, 2009 6:02 pm External to a building, under 100mm of concrete... Marker tape at 150, and conduit at 300mm... Internal to building, under 100mm of concrete.... No cover required... Just be mindful, external the rule of thumb is 600mm no mater what... Re: Electrical cable depth in ground 14Oct 12, 2019 3:35 am chuth77, Can you tell me if those requirements of 600mm apply to all private properties including Retirement Villages? I almost killed myself at a retirement village that is as questionable as a 3 dollar bill where the cables were between 200mm and 300mm below the surface running along side water pipes in the garden with no concrete...it was just dumb luck that i hit the water pipe and not the power cable. Staff had no idea where the infrastructure was located and told me it was safe. Not registered with DBYD. Now they want to charge me for the repairs. Not a happy little Vegemite! Re: Electrical cable depth in ground 15Oct 12, 2019 6:32 am They apply to all properties built whilst the standard was current. How old is the village? Electrical Engineer... Re: Electrical cable depth in ground 16Jan 29, 2020 9:47 am Any ideas on how should the cable come up ?, I have a granny flat that was built a long time ago, it has power but we don't know where the cable comes from. I am digging a trench at the moment to bridge the bag between the house and the flat. Then plan to pull the cable through it and get the sparky to come and hook it all up, just trying to figure out how should it rise up, do i just run the conduit up the piers ? any ideas are welcome Cheers Harender The distance between my DEBs varies from 4.1m at the narrowest to 8.1m at the widest. 5 27310 Hi, only for walking.
