Re: Urgent - Building Standards on Stairs. 4Dec 18, 2008 4:07 pm The BCA says that you only need a handrail if: (i) it is not bounded by a wall and (ii) any level is more than 1m above the surface beneath. so technically you can have 5 risers without needing a handrail so long as the risers dont exceed the 190mm standard. for anyone wonderin its in part 3.9.2.2 Re: Urgent - Building Standards on Stairs. 5Dec 18, 2008 5:14 pm I stand corrected. Re: Urgent - Building Standards on Stairs. 6Dec 20, 2008 10:49 pm those requirements that were stated above were for "balustrades" which is probably what u were after anyway.
a "handrail" is only the bit you hold onto. Which in most circumstances, is probably a good idea to have. Re: Urgent - Building Standards on Stairs. 7Apr 19, 2009 5:21 pm The regulations state that no handrail is required under 1 metre rise however its good practice to fit a grabrail to one side of the stair for safety particularly if the stair is tiled. With 5 treads its more than likely that the rise from one level to the other is over 1 metre therefore it should have a handrail. Check that the tread is at least 240mm minimum wide and less than 190mm max for each tread. Cheers. Building Standards; Getting It Right! Don't think they are designed for double brick. From the picture you can see the power was put in last so the electrician knew where the water was. Really it's a common sense issue more… 4 5152 2 8643 |
