We bought the house 8 years ago, and fell in love with the gardens, and many of the garden beds have been built right up against the house, and in some spots the garden beds and level, and in other areas the fall goes back towards the house. I now know garden beds against the house is a bad idea, so I think this weekend I'll be outside pulling out the plants and grading away from the slab. Eventually we'll put paving around the perimeter. In some areas there were puddles 100mm deep, and maybe 200-300mm wide. The water has all drained away this morning, but the ground is still quite soft in some spots. There is also limited drainage on this side of the house, and I have noticed pooling like this in the past - but not to this extent. We're in Gisborne, with highly reactive soil. The house was built in the mid 90s on a raft slab. My main question is, how concerned do I need to be about the water pooling against the house yesterday? My other question is about the garden beds. Should I plan to remove them completely? This certainly doesn't look good. I would be engaging with an independent inspector to have a look at this.
