Browse Forums Feng Shui 1 Apr 21, 2009 1:06 pm Do you people believe in it? I am slowly becoming a believer, especially in these times. Do you have any tips regarding it? Although I am Canadian, I split my time between Canada and Oz, and have a condo and office in Oz. Any good Aussie websites for local experts in this art? Thanks! Re: Feng Shui 2Apr 21, 2009 1:15 pm I personally fail to see that by putting my waste paper basket in the wrong part of a room I am going to become bankrupt, but hey, if thats what others believe, go for it! I have seen though that with the restrictions you tend to have on the design of houses, its very difficult to get a proper feng shui pattern happening. But I then saw several cases proving that there is definately something to it. People for example experienced less robberies when they had proper Fung Shui set up on their properties. There have even been cases of Fung Shui protecting against floods and landslides such as in Malibu California. Re: Feng Shui 5Apr 21, 2009 8:56 pm I am a very strong believer in the energy ones house can portray. Fung Shui in my opinion is all about how the energy flows throughout the house. If there is a lot of clutter in the house this is going to block the flow of energy. If you walk into your house and it feels unbalanced than it will probably mean the Fung Shui (or energy) is not balanced. If your house does not make you feel happy than again there is unbalanced energy. This is how I interpret Fung Shui and use it in my house. As far as the placement of furniture goes and the meaning of placement, I believe that keeping the energy in or out depends on where you place objects and whether or not you would like that energy to be kept in the room or out of the room. Fung Shui can be as simple or as complicated as you make it Re: Feng Shui 6Apr 22, 2009 1:07 am Hey Zara! I'm living in Canada at the moment - Victoria, BC Loving it but looking forward to going back to Melbourne in July to start building our new house As far as your question goes.... In terms of having a specific energy flow and that energy flow being able to protect houses from earthquakes and floods?? I don't think so... I do believe in some respects that having a room set up a certain way will affect a person's sub-concious and will cause them to feel stress or happiness or comfort or whatever. Like if a room is cluttered, perhaps that makes a person sub-conciously think it's messy therefore making them stressed because they feel the need to clean it all the time. Or if a room has the right pathways through, and has comfortable and homey looking furniture, then it can become a sanctuary, a place of comfort and having the 'ahhhh' factor. Similarly, colours can have the same effect on the sub-concious. Perhaps this is really what the core of Feng Shui is all about? Trying to explaing a person's sub-conscious feelings in terms of energy flows? I saw an episode of Penn and Teller while over here and they brought in 4 so called Feng Shui experts to redesign a room. None of these experts were allowed to talk to each other or see what the others had done to the room, and they all did completely different things and even contradicted each other (e.g. one said you should never use red on the walls, another painted one of the walls red). So what this tells me is that while there may be some science behind it there are a lot of people on the bandwagon trying to make money out of it when they don't really know what they are talking about. After 2 false starts, a year living overseas, two more world trips and 3 years of uncertainty we are now starting the build process again - hopefully for real this time! Re: Feng Shui 8Apr 24, 2009 3:55 pm Lostris I personally fail to see that by putting my waste paper basket in the wrong part of a room I am going to become bankrupt, but hey, if thats what others believe, go for it! Putting a waste paper basket in the wrong spot won't... The first rule of Feng Shui is sense and proportion, that is, does it make sense from a practical point of view, and how big an influence would it be? e.g. having a small 2 fish bowl (water/weath) is not going to make much influence if you want to try and influence the energy flows a 40sq double storey! A lap pool however, would justifiably have much more influence. On the hand, sitting with your back to the door is both bad from a sensible (you can't see who's coming) and a Feng shui point of view. I think this idea that feng shui is all about placement of objects around the house, display of lucky trinkets and talisman, etc is probably what makes people doubt feng shui because honestly, if you told me putting a frog at my front door would bring me money, I'd doubt you too. What I think many people don't realize that feng shui is about much more , exactly what you've posted and then some. I think you can get conflicting advice in regard to feng shui because people 'practice' different forms of feng shui and some disagree on certain points, such as some say you don't need to account for differences for northern and southern hemisphere, others say you do. And also as someone else posted, there are probably people out there trying to make a buck of it. Built with Commodore Homes - The Fusion completed April 2009 (with modifications) Yes I have moved! Most feng shui advocates would point to hong kong - almost all the commercial buildings there have been built with a practicioner on the consultancy team. Re: Feng Shui 13Apr 25, 2009 7:16 pm I think part of it is simply stating the bleeding obvious, other parts of it are just commonsense. For neither of these do you need to append any eastern mysticism. Other parts are ridiculous superstition. And like all -take-your-money superstitions it relies on the more complex and detailed aspects in order to generate income for its "experts". If it's too obvious then who'll buy the books and pay the consultants ? And I'd love to see this 'proof'. But we won't. There is no proof. I dont think its fair for others to do that about my religion. I do not think I am gullible and I do not think I am easy to rip off Re: Feng Shui 16Apr 25, 2009 8:34 pm I think that if people believe in something, anything, that makes them feel good, gives them a postive and happy feeling and doesn't harm anyone else then good luck to them. And, I hardly think you can compare Feng Shui and Astrology to Christianity!!! Why not? They are all beliefs in something that cannot be proven by science. I don't think what Joey said was offensive at all. He was simply drawing a parrallel between different beliefs and that all involve faith in the truest sense of the word, believing what cannot be proven. I don't believe he was being offensive to Christians. Some people think his beliefs are silly.... he was just pointing out that some others think other beliefs are silly. I actually think Helyn may have been offended by what bingoshelley wrote. That seemed quite offensive to anyone that believes in anything. Not sure about Feng Shui but if it aint hurting anyone then I do believe in energies though.
