Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jun 18, 2020 10:56 am We are considering to retrofit some new exterior windows into our double brick home. Outside skin is face brick. What is the standard procedure here for retrofitting flashing? Seems the head, jamb and sill flashing is generally installed during construction? Would we have to remove a further 2 courses above window/door locations to install new flashing? I'd prefer not to do this though. Thanks in advance! Re: Retrofit flashing in Double Brick Home 2Jun 24, 2020 5:33 pm I'm trying to work through this issue now. The 1970's windows in my house had only an aluminium sill flashing, no side or top.but the brick ties makes it hard to retrofit side flashing and the lack of room makes it hard to do anything. This video suggests the top flashing may be optional if the top of the window is not exposed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G57aBOZiq0M You should be able to reuse the sill flashing. The aluminium flashing I have is easier as it's free standing. This post suggest reusing is the way to go. https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=13173&p=156801&hilit=sill+flashing#p156801 Re: Retrofit flashing in Double Brick Home 3Jul 15, 2020 12:21 pm ![]() We are considering to retrofit some new exterior windows into our double brick home. You should only need to seal the window into the outer bricks by caulking around it. My understanding is that because the double brick wall system had higher tolerance to water and dam therefor caulking around is good enough and not flashing is actually needed? Am I right? Yes... use silicone, not polyurethane. Polyurethane has a life of around 6 years.
