Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jul 23, 2019 11:09 pm We are building a new house. There is a sliding door with glass panel to enter the alfresco. I had asked my builder the costs for making it a cavity so that we get a wider entrance. They have come back with a ridiculous cost of approx $5k. I was wondering if anyone has experience on the pricing for such upgrade? Cavity sliding door for alfresco - worth $5k? 3Jul 23, 2019 11:56 pm Do you mean something like this?
https://www.trendwindows.com.au/quantum ... y-stacker/ We were looking at this but decided on bifolds instead due to the extra wall space required for the cavity. I don’t think the price quoted is unreasonable. This isn’t a normal internal cavity door. Also the more panels they need to stack the larger the cavity in the wall needs to be. Are you willing to give up that much space? Re: Cavity sliding door for alfresco - worth $5k? 4Jul 24, 2019 12:08 am Yes, something similar to the pic in the link. We asked for the bi-fold before and that was also upward of $5k. Our total width is 3m so would be multi-folds. How much did it cost you? Do you have a pic? Re: Cavity sliding door for alfresco - worth $5k? 5Jul 24, 2019 12:29 am We have something like that, although it is custom made rather than a variation on a project build. However, it is not a small undertaking, so I too think the price is about right. Re: Cavity sliding door for alfresco - worth $5k? 6Jul 24, 2019 12:42 pm Ours is a custom build too. The stacker was in the original price, and when we changed it to the bifold it was an extra $2k. Our opening is 4m. The bifolds haven’t been installed yet, but if you still would like to see a photo let me know and I’ll get one when they’re in. Re: Cavity sliding door for alfresco - worth $5k? 7Jul 24, 2019 2:49 pm it is not just the cost of the door unit there is the larger lintel as it is most likely a load bearing wall which requires engineer to tell how large a lintel is required Re: Cavity sliding door for alfresco - worth $5k? 8Jul 24, 2019 8:31 pm thanks all for the responses..... at least we know now that we are not being overcharged Hillsbuilds - it would be great if u can send the pic ....f u have some catalogue pic & brand name etc that wld be great so I can show to the builder if they can source a similar one for us.... $2k is still much better than $5k Re: Cavity sliding door for alfresco - worth $5k? 9Jul 24, 2019 9:38 pm vhome no worries, I’ll get you a pic when available. It’s a 5 panel bifold from AVS Windows and Doors. I should clarify, the price for the cavity stacker was already in the builder’s build price, and then the change to the bifold was an additional $2k. Also, the panels are double glazed, which would have added to our price. I’m in a similar position except I’m after sliding 3 stacking doors. I am on a second-story apartment of which the balcony would not adequately fit any bi-fold or… 5 16153 DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair Thanks Chippy . Did also see a YouTube video before.
