Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jun 26, 2019 8:14 pm Hello All, The old timber window in our bedroom needs to be replaced for multiple reasons and my plan is to import a double glazed upvc window from China as a bit of a trial run (and perhaps replace others later) My question is this, how do I calculate the window dimensions? I’m guessing the width will just be between the bricks of opening (the window is in a double brick existing wall of a 100yo bungalow in Sydney) and allow 5 or 10mm either side? But the height seems very challenging to calculate given there is the angled bricks at the bottom outside, slightly curved bricks at the outside top and it looks like the inside sill would probably need to be replaced too. So how do I calculate the height before ordering. Obviously I am worried that I might muck up the sizes and receive a window that is useless. Thanks Re: Dimensions for a replacement window 2Jul 10, 2019 10:06 am Can you post a pic? Otherwise, best guess would be to measure your existing window on the outside, and yes, subtract 5mm (total) HxW. Just make sure that your opening is square. Can I be confident that the inside brick layer will be the same size opening? You will need brick ties to attach the new window to the brickwork. Is that a cement render on the inside? If so, repairing it will be a problem. Thanks EcoEco Good question about the inside surface, truth is a don't really know what it is but it is not gyprock. I assumed it was 'old style' plaster as the house is 100 years old Re: Dimensions for a replacement window 6Jul 18, 2019 2:25 pm Try scraping the surface with a screwdriver - is it plaster or mortar? It is highly likely that this is a cement render with steel ties. I suggest you find an experienced installer. Thanks Ecoeco, yes I definitely want to use an experienced installer but I would like to order/import the window ahead of time to save some dollars. The existing window has timber work all around, architraves and reveals etc, so there is no mortar near the window. I can easily measure the outside size but it is hard to work out how it will work on the inside. Re: Dimensions for a replacement window 8Jul 19, 2019 11:38 am I think the outside dimensions of the window will be the actual window dimensions. If you're going to employ an installer, you need to have him measure for the new window, that way he cannot say the window is the wrong size. I think it's a false economy to buy a replacement window from China. "ECOECO" At 'EcoEco', we design windows, we design the best windows, we do it for you, so that when you’re happy we are happy. I think I will employ an installer to measure, then I'll order the window and get him back in to install when it has arrived. Thanks again EcoEco. Re: Dimensions for a replacement window 10Jul 19, 2019 12:08 pm You're welcome I have no interest in your requirement, but, your risks are
