It is highly likely that this is a cement render with steel ties. I suggest you find an experienced installer. Thanks Ecoeco, yes I definitely want to use an experienced installer but I would like to order/import the window ahead of time to save some dollars. The existing window has timber work all around, architraves and reveals etc, so there is no mortar near the window. I can easily measure the outside size but it is hard to work out how it will work on the inside. If you're going to employ an installer, you need to have him measure for the new window, that way he cannot say the window is the wrong size.
