Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Sep 19, 2008 9:01 pm Hi!
I am currently researching window/door options for the home I am about to start building and I'm getting a little overwhelmed by all the "technical stuff"!! Basically, our house will have timber framed windows and doors and they will ALL be double glazed. We'd like to maximise our views, but maintain our privacy. Ideally we'd love to be able to see out, but for people not to see in! At the same time, we want them to be as efficient as possible. Can anyone possibly give me a general idea about what the best option might be for double glazed units? Reflective glass? Tinted/coloured glass? Any info would be appreciated!! Thanks! I'm not much help because I'm beside myself with confusion about double glazing!
There's heaps of people that will help you out when they see this though. Good luck! I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Best double glazed glass option for privacy and efficiency 3Sep 19, 2008 9:18 pm Hi Adam,
Search double glazing and you will find a heap of threads related to it. We all love discussing double glazing Problem with tinted and reflective glass in your case is the climate... I'm guessing that in Canberra you want all the winter solar heat gain possible We actually find that our standard double glazed windows are quite difficult to see into without standing right up against the glass and shading your view (was very annoying during the building process!). Obviously at night you can see straight in with the lights on indoors, but ditto for tinted glass as well. Are you building on a corner block or in a location with lots of passing traffic? Are you planning on having internal or external window coverings? Is there one particular aspect that you are really concerned about? I'm not much help because I'm beside myself with confusion about double glazing! Jo, just go for basic double glazing for your windows (as long as unit gets a good star rating). We didn't even specify whether it should be 3/12/3 or 5/8/5, the window manufacturer just decided based on the size and aspect of the window. Couldn't afford any of that fancy shmancy special gas stuff and, as you know, still perfectly happy with performance thus far! We're building on an elevated Nth facing block and there hopefully wont be too much traffic! I guess there's not really one particular aspect that we're worried about - there just seem to be so many options/variations and we want to make sure we make the best choice! And yes, you're right about the climate and wanting to maximise heat gain! We're having in-slab hydronic heating, so again, want to make the most of that by picking the most appropriate glazing! Hopefully we'll work it out Jo - thanks for the empathy too...haha...glad I'm not the only one confused! Re: Best double glazed glass option for privacy and efficiency 8Sep 20, 2008 11:45 am BuildingACT,
For north facing glass, you want to go clear. This way the low winter sun hits your slab and warms the inside of the house. In summer, the high summer sun can be shaded. If you want privacy, consider screens perpendicular to the window that give you privacy without blocking the winter sun. Are you considering solar hot water panels to heat/assist heating your in-slab hydronics? traditional timber joinery and the hardware that comes with it is not necessarily suitable for double glazing. There is the weight issue. (especially french doors bi-fold and sliders) The rebates need to have drainage and ventilation otherwise the lifespan of the glass unit could be limited. A worldwide recognized and longterm proven system is the IV68 timber window and door system. It is designed for double glazing, the hardware is designed to take the weight (double compared to single glazing!!) and the multipoint locking hardware is adjustable. IV68 windows are made by www.paarhammer.com.au Probably not the cheapest but you can be sure it is the best value for money and you do it ones and do it right!!!!! Re: Best double glazed glass option for privacy and efficiency 11Sep 20, 2008 5:53 pm Wow...! Thanks for all the replies...who knew windows would be such a complicated subject!
I knew that standard timber frames aren't designed to handle the size/weight of double glazing...but I just assumed that the 'window people' would tell us what was needed in that regard! Thanks for the link WindowExpert...i don't suppose you know if they supply much to Canberra of there is a local supplier that uses the same 'hardware'? Casa2...to be honest, I hadn't really thought about it a lot! Our building designer suggested in-slab hydronics as the best option...and all I knew was that we need a boiler to run it! I guess I need to do a lot more research!! Hi, I'd like some advice on the best option please on the estimate options we've been provided from our builder.
