Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jul 29, 2014 9:17 am Hi all, I have received a quote to replace my old double door entry with a single Hume 1200 door and 2 glass side panels. I was a bit surprised when the quote came back at $3,000! Is this pretty average? The quote includes door, side panels, handle, lock, door frames, new architraves for the inside, staining and new hardwood threshold at base of door. Cheers Re: Cost front door replacement? 2Jul 29, 2014 11:48 am that sounds about in the right ballpark. Cost does depend on the style of the door as well. Re: Cost front door replacement? 3Jul 29, 2014 12:04 pm A 1200 door is quite a heavy door, and a frame to suit ain't cheap. For that size you should really go for a pivot door. If it's a pivot door, with the mechanism, and the two side glass panels, that looks around right. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Re: Cost front door replacement? 4Jul 29, 2014 4:16 pm The door is a Hume Savoy XS24 1200, although we are getting 4 hinges installed instead of pivot due to child safety concerns. I asked the question about the door weight and he said as long as you use 4 hinges it isn't a problem and has installed many of these before. Re: Cost front door replacement? 5Jul 29, 2014 4:39 pm Fair enough, if you're happy with it, that's all that matters. You'll notice the hinges aren't evenly spaced, with the top two much closer together than the bottom too, which I think is done to take care of the weight issues. Re: Cost front door replacement? 7Aug 30, 2014 10:52 pm Crazyk Just remember you can't put a screen door in front of a pivot door You may not be able to put a screen DOOR in front of a pivot door, but you can get one of several different sliding screens/blinds that you can get mounted on the outside to pull across so you can leave the pivot door open without getting all the flies inside. Besides if you buy a pivot door for your main front door, you don't really want another door in front of it to hide that pivot door. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. I think they were going more for size! Anyway we like to leave our front door open for airflow. Doubt you can get a good security option for a pivot but then again maybe they are going for looks. Re: Cost front door replacement? 9Sep 12, 2014 12:16 pm This may be a silly question.... We like a door design but it only comes as a pivot door. Does anyone know whether it would be possible to install a pivot door as a normal door (i.e. opens one direction)? Not sure I'd kid myself that it would last more than a few years before the door started to have some issues. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Re: Cost front door replacement? 13Sep 12, 2014 8:06 pm mgilla Big solid heavy timber doors have successfully been swinging for a long long time before pivot doors were thought of, Jus sayin But they were in the days where quality of workmanship actually meant something. Not having a go at tradies and manufacturers , but profit has overtaken quality workmanship these days. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. We have just paid $850 for a standard single entrance door (820x2040), installed pre painted rather than stained. So to get all the sidelights in stain grade timber etc sounds ok. Re: Cost front door replacement? 16Dec 16, 2014 10:33 pm sco77k Door installed I'll have put up some photos. It's a 1200 wide door on 5 hinges. We stayed away from a pivot for safety reasons Photos please? How's the door going so far any movement with frame or issues for that matter? TIA Re: Cost front door replacement? 17Dec 17, 2014 6:42 am My 2340x1200 door has been hung for 2 years on 5 hinges with no problems. Swings more freely than my hollow doors as I used 5 heavy duty solid ball bearing hinges. Normal pin hinges won't stand a chance. As it was a big door I asked my carpenter to reinforce the timber frame and obviously long screws were used. FYI, I purchased 2 large door, a Hume and Corinthian. Hume was 50kg, and Corinthian was 70kg. Re: Cost front door replacement? 18Dec 17, 2014 8:49 am JB1 My 2340x1200 door has been hung for 2 years on 5 hinges with no problems. Did they have any concerns with just using the heavy duty hinges you did and maintaining the warranty? Did they try to insist on using a pivot system? What was the reasoning behind you using hinges as opposed to a pivot system? TIA Re: Cost front door replacement? 19Dec 17, 2014 3:12 pm Owner builder here. I would love a pivot but I couldn't justify paying over $1k for a doorframe! lol My doorframe cost me $100 odd dollars in timber which my carpenter then cut and built rather than a prefab door frame. The ball bearing hinges I have are a work of art, makes the door swing so smoothly the door seems 10kg rather than 70kg. I used KH100 75fpsss Re: Cost front door replacement? 20Mar 15, 2015 9:35 pm JB1 Owner builder here. I'm planing a custom build, my builder is also a carpenter by trade and I want a 2340mx1200 door that is swing too. We want to paint it plain and then get a feature laser cut screen as the house feature. If I told him you use KH 100 75 PSSS Will he know what I'm talking about? TIA!
