Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Dec 11, 2018 1:55 pm We have a window in our bedroom above where the bed is. It's as wide as the queen size bed, but quite narrow in height (40cm or thereabouts from memory). It currently has a sliding window in it, so we can half open it for ventilation. The biggest problem is that, with the window shut, we get quite a bit of noise from the neighbours pool pump (runs all bloody day). I know that noise can creep in everywhere but I'm wondering whether a double glazed window would be helpful for this kind of situation? Also are there other window styles which when opened would allow more ventilation for the room (it's the only window in the room) and allow for double glazing when closed? This isn't ours, just a random from the web, but it gives some idea of the window type I mean.https://i.pinimg.com/736x/1b/62/16/1b6216747fe1c135fe5ecd6381a98b79.jpg Re: Options for long but narrow (height) bedroom window? 2Dec 11, 2018 2:35 pm Just interested, but wouldn’t the noise be worse when it is open? So if you want a better ventilated opening, then won’t you get more noise, especially at night when you are trying to remain cool and sleep at the same time? The best noise abatement comes from a combination of thicker glass and a wide air gap between sheets. You can use secondary glazing, but the best results will come from a manufactured window. In terms of getting improved ventilation from a narrow wide window, a better option might be a hopper window hinged at the top and opens for the full length. A double-glazed unit will be heavier than usual, so you would need some type of gas-filled or powered struts to assist. Re: Options for long but narrow (height) bedroom window? 6Dec 19, 2018 10:48 am landyvlad Hmm thank you. Sounds expensive. We can make that... double glazed 4/12/4 = Rw 34.5 alternatively 8.76/9/5 = Rw 39. Any size single sash opening up to 1200H x 2650W So 400 x 2000 is easy... And prices are really good... Just ask. Why not stick a doona on the inside of your window and see if that makes a big difference, then you know the contribution that the window makes to your noise problem. If you do hear anything different, would be great to know 4 5990 dimensions on your original plan are inconsistent and with accurate dimensions (including site plan, upstairs and down) i could make a proper scale drawing with furniture… 3 6196 Thanks NativeZen! I can't wait to start landscaping, though it's going to be a while away yet. No movement on site yet as of the weekend. Hoping to see some earthworks… 3 2160 |
