Browse Forums Windows & Doors Re: Options for long but narrow (height) bedroom window? 4Dec 11, 2018 3:31 pm landyvlad We have a window in our bedroom above where the bed is. It's as wide as the queen size bed, but quite narrow in height (40cm or thereabouts from memory). It currently has a sliding window in it, so we can half open it for ventilation. The biggest problem is that, with the window shut, we get quite a bit of noise from the neighbours pool pump (runs all bloody day). I know that noise can creep in everywhere but I'm wondering whether a double glazed window would be helpful for this kind of situation? Also are there other window styles which when opened would allow more ventilation for the room (it's the only window in the room) and allow for double glazing when closed? The best noise abatement comes from a combination of thicker glass and a wide air gap between sheets. You can use secondary glazing, but the best results will come from a manufactured window. In terms of getting improved ventilation from a narrow wide window, a better option might be a hopper window hinged at the top and opens for the full length. A double-glazed unit will be heavier than usual, so you would need some type of gas-filled or powered struts to assist. Re: Options for long but narrow (height) bedroom window? 6Dec 19, 2018 9:48 am landyvlad Hmm thank you. Sounds expensive. We can make that... double glazed 4/12/4 = Rw 34.5 alternatively 8.76/9/5 = Rw 39. Any size single sash opening up to 1200H x 2650W So 400 x 2000 is easy... And prices are really good... Just ask. Why not stick a doona on the inside of your window and see if that makes a big difference, then you know the contribution that the window makes to your noise problem.
