Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jul 24, 2018 9:14 am Hey Guys, Just curious.. if you had a timber entry door to your house, did you get to choose a colour stain? Our front door was stained last week & we weren't consulted at all about the colour or given an option. The stain is so dark & I absolutely hate it - it doesn't tie in with our facade at all. I asked the builder why we weren't able to choose the stain and he said "this is just the standard stain that I use". I'm so frustrated... it's our bloody front entrance & we had no say in what colour?! Sounds absurd to me. Re: Front entrance door - help! 3Jul 24, 2018 7:56 pm Yup you got shafted. Was it in your contract the type of stain you are getting? Re: Front entrance door - help! 4Jul 25, 2018 9:14 am You definitely should have been offered the option. Who are you building with? Re: Front entrance door - help! 5Jul 25, 2018 9:54 am Thanks for the response! Nope, nothing in the contract or inclusions to do with the door colour or stain - it just states what brand the door is to be. We are building with a small local company. I just don't understand why we couldn't choose... we've chosen every other internal and external colour so far. There are so many different colour stains available, so I don't know why they would just choose one colour for every house 'as standard'. It's a really dark mahogany colour, not at all what we wanted I've told the builder we aren't happy with the colour, that it's too dark & we wanted something much lighter. That was two days ago... no response yet. I have a feeling he is just going to ignore it & hope that we get over it... Re: Front entrance door - help! 6Jul 25, 2018 10:12 am Unfortunately I think at this point in the process there isn't much you can do if they really want to be difficult. You could try contacting the builder and requesting a repaint, noting that it wasn't something you as the owner was given a choice of. They may either nicely agree, or quote a price to paint the door, which may also accrue a fee for altering a choice after contract. Or you could ask the painter if they would sand it and repaint for cash in hand. This should have been picked up in the admin/contract stages so you can ask them, but the builder probably isn't under any obligation at this time to change it at their cost. The door is $250 from Bunnings, so thinking we'll just buy a new one after handover & stain it ourselves. Just hate adding things to the 'to do list' that could have been avoided. Thanks for the advice! The warning is on the sticker on the door too. Second the aluminium powdercoat 6 18616 Building Standards; Getting It Right!
