Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Mar 02, 2018 10:21 am Hi everyone, My husband and I just finished building our new home a few months ago in Gunnedah NSW (builders did an incredible job and we love them for it!) and now that we've had a few months of summer in the house, we're looking for ways to cut down on the heat that is getting blasted into the house from the morning/afternoon sun. While our house faces north, it's longest sides face east and west respectively so we didn't really do ourselves any favours there, but we do have a pretty good western view and we knew there was going to be some drawbacks to facing the house the way we did. We had interior blockout blinds put on all of the windows and we're also putting curtains up soon, so I know that once that is done it will go a long way in preventing most of the heat coming in - but we don't want to have to live with the curtains closed 24/7! Nearly all our rooms are boiling in summer - eastern ones are unbearable in the mornings without air con and it's the same in the second half of the day for the western side - and even with the air con on (which is ducted to the whole house and set to 23-25 degrees - and we've even tried 18 degrees), the temperature still stubbornly sits in the high 20's and low 30's because of all the heat coming in - and that's with the blockouts down! I've also never seen the temperature drop below 22 inside, even at night, so we know the house is retaining a lot of the heat too! So we thought tinting might be an option to help reduce heat coming in, meaning that the house will stay generally cooler and the air con won't have to work as hard! Bonus is, the tint will also help protect paintwork, flooring and possessions etc. so I'm all for that! Is there anyone out there who has had experience with tinting that can give us some reviews/opinions and a rough idea on pricing? We have 13 windows, all 1800 high except for two 600's (bathroom and laundry) and they are all between 900-2100 wide bar one, which is 2700. My husband is also really interested in hearing what the tinting does as far as inside temperatures go, so if there is anyone out there that can give us an idea on the temps they were living with prior and then what reductions they might have seen after the tint was applied, that would be raelly helpful! Thanks so much in advance! Sarah Re: Opinions & Reviews Wanted - Window Tinting (after) New H 2Mar 03, 2018 7:44 pm Its not tinting that makes a difference you need to use a reflective film. We found that it can easily drop the temperature by 4-5 degrees within minutes of being installed. We used Tint-a-Car. Sorry no recent prices as it was over 10 years ago. Thanks very much for the info! Will definitely look into this! I had read that this causes issues for neighbours in built up areas, but as we are on a 3 acre parcel of land I think something like this should be ok for us. Thanks again! ![]() Re: Opinions & Reviews Wanted - Window Tinting (after) New H 5Mar 08, 2018 8:56 am We used tinting - the strongest - on our West wall windows - for both heat and privacy. I feel it does work - but is only part of the package. We also draw the blinds when the sun comes around. I feel an awning would be better - but much more expensive - especially if you went for a decent one - ie moving. Louvres are also an option - but again can be costly. A good extraction device is another answer. Whirligigs in the roof etc - to get the air out. I see they have solar powered ones now to really move it out fast. BUT - nothing really compensates for the heat accumulated by metres of brick walls ... ![]() Bushes/trees will break the sun before it hits the house - perhaps the best way to stop it. Re: Opinions & Reviews Wanted - Window Tinting (after) New H 6Mar 08, 2018 9:06 am We used https://www.windowtint.com.au/ in Qld - but they are in various locations I believe. The franchise we used was very good. They might give you an idea on price regardless of whether they are in your area.
