Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Aug 31, 2008 5:55 pm Hey guys
We are stuck on one final interior design decision for our new home. We are trying to decide between having standard flush panel doors or the 2 panel doors that people such as VJ, Paula and Toni will have in their homes Our home is a modern/contemporary look which is why we originally chose the flush panel - also due to their ease of cleaning The more I look at the 2 panel doors though - in Paula's new house pictures, in VJs blog and now on Toni's blog - I think maybe we should choose these - they can make the home look 'sophisticated/classy' I think, but again I'm not 100% sure about the decision as I don't' mind either, but I keep thinking I might regret not getting the panel doors later on. I know the 4 panel doors are more of an 'antique' type feel - my mum has these in her renovated weatherboard and they look great, but I already know they wouldn't suit my style of home. I'm wondering though for those that have the 2 panel doors - do you find them a pain to clean/dust? Also are they on all doors - robes/linen closest etc or just room doors? I'm trying to decide between the 2 and need some help Borrowing a photo from P to show you the doors I mean Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ My karma ran over your dogma Re: 2 Panel Doors 2Aug 31, 2008 7:10 pm Bel, I think two panels do look classy
As far as dusting, a quick wipe is all they need, and thats only really on the bits where dust can settle - does that make sense??? By the way we will be wall mounting the TV in the pic Paula Re: 2 Panel Doors 3Aug 31, 2008 7:16 pm Is that a pussy-cat cat?
I think the two panel do look very classy but we're still getting the flush as we're after a more minimalist streamlined look. omg that's so funny I didn't write cat twice Re: 2 Panel Doors 6Aug 31, 2008 7:48 pm Personally I like the flush doors for a clean, minimal look- I like the doors to fade away a bit rather than being a feature in the wall. That's just me though Re: 2 Panel Doors 7Aug 31, 2008 9:29 pm Hmm see this is where I am stuck too
If we were to get the flush panel they would be high gloss white and they also have nice bright silver handles which we upgraded. I like the plain doors door for areas such as toilet doors and kids bedroom doors and bathrooms, but I prefer the 2 panel for things like our double doors to our bedroom, double doors to rumpus, understair storage etc... The problem is I don't like to use the 2 different doors throughout the house, it has to be one or the other.... Good to know they don't need a heap of cleaning Paula We actually deleted the waterfall edge from our L shaped kitchen today, I saw it in the flesh and didn't love love it, so I knew it wasn't worth the upgrade cost. The doors if we got the 2 panel throughout the home would probably set us back about $1800..... Really stuck on this one!! My karma ran over your dogma Re: 2 Panel Doors 8Aug 31, 2008 9:57 pm Bel, We had a similar feel house and we had the single panel (runs around the door 10cm in from the edge of the whole door) and this gave us the look that you are after but alot more of a simple look.
Inbetween flush and 2 so you could say and never regreted it. Very easy to clean when i did my skirting with the feather duster a quick once over and your done..........I must say the flush look pretty good too. I dont' think you would love having 2 different doors in the house unless they were in completely seperate areas. But its probably best to keep uniform if you can. As long as your doors suit your house I don't think it will be a standout feature that would be a "kick yourself if you didn't item". If you know what I mean. Again how much do you looove those doors. $1800 love? Either way you go I think it will look awesome. Re: 2 Panel Doors 9Aug 31, 2008 10:28 pm Bel,
Paula's kids are over 10. Yours aren't. That's why hers are clean. Yours won't be. Toddlers are disgusting creatures. Rather than upgrade to nicer looking doors, we upgraded to thicker, heavier doors. For kids I reckon this is better value for money. Better sound barrier and a bit tougher for banging heads, toy trucks, doll prams, kicks during tantrums, etc, etc, etc,etc........... Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: 2 Panel Doors 11Aug 31, 2008 10:42 pm I never thought of that either Jo, something else to consider... Funnily enough we have the flush doors in our current home, and they do get filthy with my kids fingerprints, but they are very easy to clean - just a wipe and they are done, I wouldn't have thought there would be much difference with the 2 panel doors - I was more worried about the dust collecting in the panels... I like the sound of the doors you have gweluphome, unfortunatly PD give us an option of flush, 2 panel, 4 panel and not much else I think.... It's interesting that you say you don't think we would regret the flush panel if we didn't end up getting the 2 panel, this is pretty much the only reason we are considering it...I really don't want anything in the house to be 'Oh I wish I had got those...' and I'm scared I will do this if I don't get the doors. I've been to PD displays with either the 4 panel or the flush, and if I concentrate on the doors, I often walk away thinking the panelled doors just look 'better' but then my Mum said if I wasn't thinking about the doors - I don't even notice them, in fact most of the displays I wouldn't even remember what the doors looked like - so it's not a huge issue unless I actually think about it.. My mum keeps reminding me no-one has ever told her how much they love her 'doors' My karma ran over your dogma Re: 2 Panel Doors 14Aug 31, 2008 11:01 pm PK and Rachelle,
In Melbourne most of the display homes use the heavier doors. They are noticable different with their movement than the standard doors. They feel heavier and stronger. All my brothers have put holes in doors at one point or another from playing wrestling etc so it was the first thing mum suggested. Also I often wonder about putting soundproofing in theatre rooms etc but then not upgrading to solid doors or even putting glass doors on the room. It kind of defeats the purpose. Sorry for the hijack Bel! Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: 2 Panel Doors 16Aug 31, 2008 11:36 pm You know what I think, Bel, but if you really love the 2 panel doors, your kids won't be toddlers for that long (believe me... ) so I wouldn't discount them for that reason alone! Go with your heart!
I love your mum's comment - that's a classic!!! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: 2 Panel Doors 17Aug 31, 2008 11:48 pm joles Bel, Paula's kids are over 10. Yours aren't. That's why hers are clean. Yours won't be. That sounds really horrible doesn't it. You know what I meant Bel, humour way off the mark tonight sorry! Get the doors you love! I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: 2 Panel Doors 18Sep 01, 2008 7:59 am Why don't you just keep the standard flush doors, live with them for a while after hadover and change them yourself at a later stage, if need be.
That way you will be sure whether you still want them or not PLUS the replacements ( fi you go that way) will be cheaper to buy than if the builder does it, with the inevitable markup Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: 2 Panel Doors 19Sep 01, 2008 10:00 am I think you are right Southies - I looked on the Corinthian website and I think they are charging about $50 a door for the ones I was looking at or about $250 for the more solid panel doors...
PD charges about $70 per panel door.... We might stick with standard flush (unless our budget comes in magically WAY under with our 2nd soil test) then we might reconsider the door issue... Atleast we know it is something we can change after. Jo - Don't worry, I don't take offence to much My karma ran over your dogma Re: 2 Panel Doors 20Sep 01, 2008 12:31 pm joles Paula's kids are over 10. Yours aren't. That's why hers are clean.
