Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Sep 03, 2017 1:17 pm Hi there, Does anyone have any experience with using recycled windows in a build? I want to use recycled feature casement windows for a heritage look but I can't find a reference to using recycled windows in a renovation/new build. Do recycled windows still need to adhere to the same Australian Standard as new windows? It's hard to find a reference in the standards considering these publications aren't available to the public to read for free. Cheers, Recycled windows/glazing and Australian Standards 2Sep 03, 2017 3:58 pm I don't know if they have to comply but I wonder why you wouldn't want them to comply since the regulations are there to provide surety and benefit? Moreover, I don't see why you couldn't have them comply. Timber frames are good insulators and if you restore the windows well you should meet the standard tests. You could also add secondary glazing to make them double-glazed for better thermal efficiency. https://www.awa.org.au/documents/item/191 Finally, the Department of Environment encourages recycling of building materials in the building industry, so it might be worth talking to your council (which is responsible for certification) and perhaps playing the two authorities off each other if there is an impasse. https://www.environment.gov.au/system/files/resources/b0ac5ce4-4253-4d2b-b001-0becf84b52b8/files/case-studies.pdf Re: Recycled windows/glazing and Australian Standards 3Sep 03, 2017 7:23 pm Renovation will be fine. New build will we have to meet 6 stars. If you can achieve 6 stars using single glazing, then I'm sure you can use them as long as the glass is AS. I'd try to incorporate double glazing if possible. Best to speak to the building surveyor as they will be the ones who sign off on the house, or not. But if your windows are in good condition, then that is a start. They then need to meet AS1288, the glass code, so they will likely need reglazing, it would be worthwhile thinking about double gazing as JB1 has said, the critical issues would be the glass rebate, is it deep enough for a double glazed unit, and then the hardware, hinges etc., are they strong enough for the load, or will you need to change them. The energy question is easily dealt with, you can use generic timber values in the energy report.
