Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Aug 18, 2017 5:03 pm We have just finished our build and I am not completely happy with how the stain colour looks on our front door. It is a maple door with a clear stain. Is there any way we can restain it without sanding it back? Our builder said that it will need to be sanded back to restain it and to get it done by them will obviously cost a lot more money. Has anyone had this happen? What kind of price would be looking at to get this done? Thanks in advance! Re: Re-staining front door 2Aug 18, 2017 6:51 pm VandM It is a maple door with a clear stain. I'm pretty sure you mean a clear lacquer, varnish, sealer or oil, as a clear stain would be water. If it is any one of those, then that is likely to inhibit a satin from penetrating properly, because that is why you seal timber, to protect it from weathering and staining. Therefore, I suggest your builder is correct, and the door will need to be sanded back in order for you to be able to stain it a different colour.
