Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Aug 13, 2008 7:55 am Hi All,
Does anyone know how much it costs to install security locks on windows? Is it easy to DIY? My builder is asking for $50 per window (lock provided and installed). Any ideas/feedback will be greatly appreciated. Regards, Amalner. Re: Security Locks on Windows 2Aug 13, 2008 8:08 am I cant find the details but I got mine through the builder and actually saved quite a bit of money.
$50 per window would be worth it. I would go through your builder in this case. Adrian B Re: Security Locks on Windows 4Aug 13, 2008 8:17 am My builder quoted $16 per lock installed. Another builder I've considered previously quoted only $5 per lock installed, and some others had them as standard. Re: Security Locks on Windows 6Aug 13, 2008 8:48 am Wouldn't hurt to get a couple of quotes before going with the builder's offer. Re: Security Locks on Windows 7Aug 13, 2008 9:29 am I just checked my paperwork and mine works out to around $18 for each window lock. That's with the big M so that's pretty good from the looks of things!
Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Security Locks on Windows 8Aug 13, 2008 9:59 am We are with PD and we paid $37.00 each. We thought it was better to get it done now rather than mucking around with them after handover. I believe the Insurance Companies love you a little bit more if you have them too.
Gee Jo, you got a bargain with $18.00! Happy at Home Re: Security Locks on Windows 9Aug 13, 2008 10:03 am M just have a standard price for a single storey and a standard price for a double regardless of how many windows.
All our windows are awning and the big ones have two openings so need two locks. I'm very happy now reading this as you always assuem your being ripped off. But I realise M are probably only paying about $1.50 for each lock. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I have a secret about my window locks which I'll reveal later Happy at Home Re: Security Locks on Windows 12Aug 13, 2008 3:48 pm Hi,
It shows again how poorly designed OZ and NZ windows are if those unpractical and dangarous window locks are used for new houses. Modern windows with multipoint lock mechanism don't need such additions. Why are those window locks dangarous?? In case of an emergeny, egress can be delayed or become impossible if the keys are not found. Imagine you have to try to unlock two of them in thick smoke, or a small child needs to get out.......and what was meant to be secure can easily be fatal The same applies to bthose "security stays" Re: Security Locks on Windows 14Aug 14, 2008 1:04 pm Minx People get charged for this??? Wow, my windows came standard with locks and flyscreens. Geeze those big builders make money out of nothing sometimes. You were lucky Minx, I think $37 is a rip off but it was for piece of mind for me. DH travels alot, locks on windows help me feel a bit more secure and I'll also have an alarm set downstairs while we are sleeping upstairs. Happy at Home Re: Security Locks on Windows 15Aug 14, 2008 8:40 pm Minx, just check what you are getting.
Ours came with "locked windows" included but in fact all this meant was that the sliding window could slide into closed postion and lock into place. Make sure you are getting "vent locks" in other words, ones that window can be locked small way open with keys. We upgraded to these at very reasonable cost of $190 for whole house. Flyscreens were standard on all windows, we upgraded to ampilmesh on sliding doors. And yes, window expert has a point about safety; like deadlocks, the keys should be kept in the lock or very easily accesible in case of needing to exit in emergency, particuarly a fire. In ouyr current house, we put a smll hook on the window frame so the key can be kept there. Re: Security Locks on Windows 16Aug 15, 2008 11:06 am Sorry guys, I should of added that i'm building on my own. With the windows, I got 3 quotes and the people I ended up going with were the dearest. My windows came with all the locks and fly screens and I went for the dearer one as their windows looked better, I got a number of commercial windows and when testing their windows at the factory I found that they open and closed easier and the overall quality was better over the other two.
Also my partner did a renovation where he needed to put in a few windows and they came with locks and fly screen also. I wonder if they do come standard and project builders are making extra money by charging the customer for it, or if they have struck a deal to not include locks and fly screens to get an ever better price.
