Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jan 09, 2017 3:14 pm I am building a new single storey house with double glazed aluminium improved windows. All are awning windows. I have 3 questions on which I'd be grateful for opinions: 1 The windows are tall - 1809 / 1806 and are currently shown with no divider/transom, so they open from the bottom, rather than halfway. I have seen both and the builder says I can have either for the same price. What are the pros and cons of with/without? My ceiling height is 2.7m, apparently a little taller than normal. I prefer the look without, particularly across the front facade, which has 2 in the lounge/2 in the bedroom (all AW1809) and one either side of the garage (fixed 1806). 2 I've chosen awning windows (1209 - 1215) for the bedrooms, bathroom etc because I think sliders will be harder to secure against burglars etc in a climate (Wagga) where windows need to remain open for evap air. I notice most people go with sliders - is there a reason for this? Am I missing the point? 3 Colour - are dark colour frames problematic for longevity, fading etc? I'm going to have a light render/garage/roof etc probably all Surfmist, so was thinking of maybe C/bond Woodland Grey or Monument but I read on a forum that dark colour frames deteriorate. True? False? Good idea or not? Many thanks! I'm getting hard up against decision time. Re: Tall awning windows -3 questions 2Jan 10, 2017 11:33 am We have 2700w x 450h windows on the front of our house. I love the look. I also have an awning window in my kitchen. While I like the awning window I personally prefer the sliding as it let in more air imo. I've heard awning windows are good for not letting in dust. If you dont want the break in the middle then go for awning windows. Also our frames are monument. No render yet but we are also having ought coloured render so will be a nice contrast. I'd also consider doing your gutter in the same colour as your frames, to break up the same colour the whole way through, as we have. Re: Tall awning windows -3 questions 3Jan 10, 2017 10:26 pm 1. I think the only real difference with transom vs no transom for awning windows at the front is aesthetics. And yes, without is probably a cleaner, more modern look. 2. We've got sliders at our current place and having being burgled via one a few years ago, we are switching to awning for our new home. As far as I am aware, most builders offer sliding Windows as standard, I think because they are cheaper. 3. Can't really comment on this, sorry, though I think colourbond is pretty sturdy when it comes to sunlight as the colour is baked in. Different story if you were going with a powder coated option. Re: Tall awning windows -3 questions 4Jan 11, 2017 12:52 pm Thanks guys, it is SO helpful to have some feedback. I really appreciate it! And thanks Craigasaurus for the gutter colour suggestion. I'd read on a blog that "your gutter is not a feature" but I think I have to do something to tie the darker colour windows in, given the rest is white. And probably timber front door. Re: Tall awning windows -3 questions 5Jan 12, 2017 1:53 pm My hubby is a Painter so he has chosen the colour scheme. We have shale grey roof and Fasica, monument gutter, white duck qrtr render and monument frames. Rendering isn't complete yet but can't wait to see the finished look. I trust hubbies eye for colour and detail. Re: Tall awning windows -3 questions 6Jan 14, 2017 10:56 am Craigasaurus My hubby is a Painter so he has chosen the colour scheme.
