If I sand everything back to bare timber, then the varnish will make the whole door look dark, like what I've shown on the photo. Is there anyway i can maintain the light timber colour the door? He said strip the whole door back to bare timber. Then use a cabots pine stain varnish (oil based). Apply with Brush or foam roller. Apply two coats allowing adequate time for each coat to dry. The problem is you used a natural which gives a wet timber look. Re: Pls Help! There's dozens of types of varnish. coloured, clear, satin, gloss, matte, oil based, water based, etc. Whatever you do, you need to sand the whole frame back to bare timber. No exceptions. Otherwise it will look like what you've got now.
