Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jun 26, 2016 2:10 pm Ok, I need help! Photo showing the problem after I varnished. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I have a timber sliding door which I assume was previously varnished. I had to re-varnish the door because some parts of it were peeling away. The majority of the door was fine though. Steps I followed: 1. The peeling parts - Sand back to bare timber. The bare timber was darker in colour compared to the non-peeling parts. Not sure why? 2. The non-peeling parts - Sand slightly so that the original varnish was still there. 3. Washed down the dirt with water. 4. Painted the whole door with natural varnish. (Wattyl Weathergard High Gloss Exterior Varnish Natural) End result: The non-peeling parts looked like before. The bare timber parts became darkened (like dampened with water). Now the door is ugly with 2 different set of colours! What should I do? Note: I am happy to pay a professional to do this. I am in Sydney north shore. I got 2 other timber windows with the same problem. Re: Pls Help! Varnish timber door failure 3Jun 26, 2016 3:50 pm Ponzu Need to sand back the lot to bare timber. But i dont want it to go dark... I just wanted it to look like before (light coloured timber). so there is no way the varnish was suppose to work in the first place? Re: Pls Help! Varnish timber door failure 5Jun 29, 2016 4:42 pm You will have to sand back to bare. It would be easier to get a Painter in to do it. Re: Pls Help! Varnish timber door failure 6Jun 29, 2016 8:29 pm Craigasaurus You will have to sand back to bare. It would be easier to get a Painter in to do it. Thanks for the advise. If I sand everything back to bare timber, then the varnish will make the whole door look dark, like what I've shown on the photo. Is there anyway i can maintain the light timber colour the door? Some people suggested to use lighter/clear varnish, but I thought there is only 1 type of varnish. Re: Pls Help! Varnish timber door failure 7Jun 29, 2016 9:52 pm Hubby is Painter. He said strip the whole door back to bare timber. Then use a cabots pine stain varnish (oil based). Apply with Brush or foam roller. Apply two coats allowing adequate time for each coat to dry. The problem is you used a natural which gives a wet timber look. Re: Pls Help! Varnish timber door failure 8Jun 29, 2016 11:53 pm world2160 Some people suggested to use lighter/clear varnish, but I thought there is only 1 type of varnish. There's dozens of types of varnish. coloured, clear, satin, gloss, matte, oil based, water based, etc. Whatever you do, you need to sand the whole frame back to bare timber. No exceptions. Otherwise it will look like what you've got now. Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15884 Thanks Pulse, thats really helpful and very much appreciated. Also thanks for the pointer on sheathing, thats me watching too many american youtube videos! 6 2750 If this is a custom build then I would expect the builder to set out the door frame closer to the wall to avoid the gap between architrave and the wall and or specify… 9 8287 |
