Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jul 31, 2008 4:56 pm Hello everyone
I've just come across this forum and I wish I knew about it 6 months ago when we were beginning to build! Our builder has just given us one headache after another. We're up to lockup stage, but when we went to inspect the house we found that the sliding aluminium doors all have a big, bulky protrusion. I have never seen windows like this and they look hideous! The builder (who makes the windows) says that the reason their display homes don't have these is because Australian Standards have changed since then, and now their windows need to be stronger. But why then does no-one else seem to have such horrible windows? Has anyone ever seen sliding glass door frames like these? We're so angry because we were going to put roller blinds in the window cavity Re: WARNING: Check your window &door profiles before signin 4Jul 31, 2008 5:13 pm That's a good point, I never notice that in the display homes.
My new sliding door actually has that "protrusion" thing you mentioned and I thought it's standard... too late to change now for me... You should fight for it, at least for some compensation if it's different from the display home. From another view point, may be an option (after you received your compensation of course ), is it possible to install your blinds on the wall instead of in the cavity area? You are better of with European designed joinery. better performance better design better looking more practical Re: WARNING: Check your window &door profiles before signin 6Jul 31, 2008 5:43 pm I've never seen such a thing
We've got a pretty large bay of windows in our lounge, and it is all fairly standard on the windows and the sliding doors....The only "unsightly" part is the whopping big steel pillar in the corner, but you can't even see it from inside anyway. We've started wondering... maybe the reason that the windows are so horribly over-engineered is because the window manufacturer (who is owned by the builder) doesn't want to stock both low and high wind load frame profiles due to cost. Then they just make all their standard windows overengineerered... I do think we'll end up fighting them over this, but I don't know if it can go anywhere since they don't manufacturer the proper doors anymore. Re: WARNING: Check your window &door profiles before signin 8Jul 31, 2008 9:00 pm Looking at that picture I can't actually work out what the heck I'm looking at.
Those sections of the frame protruding that you have outlined don't look like they are doing anything at all. They aren't even supporting much load as the window above them doesn't look like it's designed to transfer it. Is that just a lump of extruded aluminium that I'm looking at? If so that sort of explains why it needs to be so big. I can't help but think there is a much more asthetically pleasing and less cheap assed solution for that. I'd be talking to the window manufacturer to find out what designs they have to suit wide sliding door/window frames that don't include butt ugly bensonhurst looking frames. I'm sure there would be something - it will just be more expensive. If there is then you can pressure the builder a bit more. i would suggest nothing is unreasonable for PCI. we did all sorts, including checking the hot water, checking all the GPO's had power, testing that the showers were… 9 98619 I have been looking into getting quotes for a reno I am doing shortly.
