Just researched how to DIY strip paint off our front door to restore & looks like any pre-1960s paint could be dangerous due to the possible lead content. Google isn't helping in the search for someone in Perth that can do this for us, any ideas? We are in the City of Vincent. I would like to attempt the rest of the restoration myself. Thanks in advance! Re: 1900's front door paint stripping - Perth 2Mar 29, 2016 7:59 am You can do this yourself easily despite your paint probably containing lead. Don't sand it off but use something like the Citristrip gel http://www.floodaustralia.net/products/ ... istrip.php which is easy to apply and easy to remove. The paint will be contained in the gel as will the lead, scrape it off and put in a plastic bag. Don't take the door to a commercial stripper ( umm, you know what I mean ! ) as they mostly dip the doors in an acid bath. It removes the paint of course but can also soak into all the mortise and tenon joints and then ruin the glue which holds your door together. Thanks in advance! Old girl Reno Old girl Reno Hi I’ve just got some old doors in a similar situation. I’m also in CoV. Just wondering how you got on with this solution? Thanks Re: 1900's front door paint stripping - Perth 5Apr 24, 2022 12:29 pm If you want to do it yourself, follow Stewie's advice and use a liquid paint stripper and then dispose of the stripped paint in the bin. If you want someone else to do it you can remove them and take them somewhere like the strip joint in Vic Park. They will put it in a tank and then strip it for you. Obviously that is harder if it's an external door that you are trying to keep. Is it worth a try first? Any thoughts on that product but if Stewie’s suggestion is best I’ll try that. Building Standards; Getting It Right!
