My apartment has a lot of huge aluminum windows. They are all 40 years old. There are seven vertical sliding windows. They all rattle. Also, a lot of the window seals are broken. They look like this: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ My questions are: 1. My "builder" said nowadays, people just seal these windows with silicon (as in, take off the old sealing strip, replace with silicon instead) rather than replace the plastic/rubber sealing strip. Is this true? Seems rather unprofessional to me. Where can I buy these seals from? I am keen to do the replacement myself. Seems easy enough. Just push the strip in, and cut off at the corners. Does anyone know any tricks? 2. To fix the rattle, I think I will just stick strips of "hairy/furry" look things into the window frame, between the sliding components. Question is, where do I buy these from? Any indication on price? Thanks in advance. Re: replacbroken seal in aluminium window, also, rattle solution 3Mar 17, 2009 8:04 am I don't know of any repair kits. The materials you want are glazing wedge and wool pile. They come in different profiles so you need to be specific. I don't know anyone who sells by the metre.
Try your window manufacturer. There may be a name on the handle. The problem with the glazing wedge is that it was stretched when it was fitted and now it's shrinking back. You could take it out, put it in hot water and restretch it - could last another 40 years. Is this true? Never heard of anyone doing it to windows not designed for it, but silicone would be far superior to the glazing wedge in terms of strength and weather protection. But it is costly to have applied and very difficult to do well yourself. All commercial windows - and all ECoClassic aluminium windows - are silicon glazed.
