Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Jan 22, 2016 8:44 am Hi I am replacing all the windows/doors in my unit. Is using Hush 6.5mm glass likely to be quiter than using the standard 6.38mm safety glass? I am not taking any other measures to reduce noise. The additional cost of Hush glass is $2000. I am close to a busy road and in a high density area, so aircon and pool pumps near by. Thanks Re: Hush laminated glass vs ordinary safety glass 2Feb 12, 2016 12:34 am Well, it's bound to be more quiet, the question is how much more quiet. Also, do you have large glass surfaces? Because if so, the benefit from using this kind of glass will be bigger. There are 9 windows, the largest are the patio windows/doors 2.1m high by 4.8m (4 x 1.2m windows/doors); 4 .windows 9m high x 2.4m wide and a couple of external doors with side windows. I requested expanding foam be used around them. Last year we resealed the tile roof with a heat reflective paint but over the summer there was no apparent improvement in heat. We had to opt for a lighter color then we wanted to get the reflective paint and pay over a $1k more so not worth it. I hope the glass is not a similar disappointment. Re: Hush laminated glass vs ordinary safety glass 4Feb 12, 2016 7:27 am 6db better than ordinary safety glass and improved insulation qualities thanks to the low-E coating as well. Anything that can reduce the noise of the road traffic etc will be worth it even if it is a modest gain. Heavy drapes made of the right material help a lot too. I drew some plans for a woman a while ago that wanted to reduce road noise to her house who used this glass in the windows that fronted the street. Not a huge difference but it helped. Stewie Where are you getting the 6dB from? This is incorrect. You can download an info sheet on this glass from the internet. Ordinary 6.38mm laminated across frequencies 100Hz to 4000Hz has an Rw of 33 while 6.50 Vlam Hush across 100Hz to 5000Hz has an Rw of 36. Low-e coating is an extra, its not standard on Vlam Hush so there will be negligible improved insulation qualieties. If the current windows and doors have mohair seals or no seals whatever benefits of reduced transmission of noise through the better glass will be eroded by the high air leakage of the sliding windows and doors. A better option for the original poster would have been to upgrade to 12.50 Vlam Hush for a much more noticeable improvement, and better still would have been to rip the current set up out and put in some proper acoustic windows and doors that are double glazed with thick compression seals. The current plan for noise reduction will make little difference to perceived noise and is a bit like putting a band aid on a broken arm. Would the original poster offer feedback once the new glass is installed? The window supplier claimed he had recently installed the hush glass without bothering with expanding foam and it had made a noticeable improvement in his opinion and the owners, he did not mention the type/size of window. You can solve any problem in the building game WF - it just depends on how much cash you want to throw at it to do so. I'd say the OP has probably done some research, weighed up his options, got some quotes and gone for a $2k solution. Sure he could pull out all his windows and replace them with much better ones with the thicker 12.50mm glass ( double glazed of course ) , install a second skin of external wall with acoustic batts, resilient mounts, two layers of Soundchek plasterboard with green glue and ceilings etc for an optimal solution but he probably wouldn't get much change out of $30k. Somehow I really don't think he wants to spend that..... Stewie Hi everyone. I am a single mother with little daughter, living in a small tourist town in WA Australia. I am thinking to install security screens to all the doors and… 0 24973 Need to remove glass panel out of concrete without wrecking the glass to get the spa room in, any recommendations on how to do that.
