Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Nov 23, 2015 1:22 pm My new apartment has casement windows throughout, where the bottom part opens outward and has a little handle thing you turn to open the window. There are no screens on any of the windows. I think there are a total of 10 windows that are able to be opened, and I'd like to put some sort of fly screen on each of them. I want the screen to be as subtle as possible, as I have water views and don't want to obscure them. I've read that the screens with the cutout for the handle are obsolete and nowadays, people use magnetized screens. I have 2 cats who are strictly indoor only, and we cannot have them getting out through any of these windows, so the screens would need to be very, very strong and sturdy, not able to be scratched through or pulled off. Does anyone have any ideas about what might be best? Anyone else have casement windows? Thanks! Re: Fly screens for casement windows 2Nov 23, 2015 3:27 pm I've read that the screens with the cutout for the handle are obsolete I've never used the magnetic ones so don't know if they would be cat proof. You can buy the hand cut outs and install them into a flyscreen so they are still available. (I think bunnings sell them). Not hard to install them before installing the screen. But do you know how you are going to install flyscreens? I'm guessing your windows are timber frame which won't have a groove to fix the flyscreen into. My casement windows had separate timber framed sliding flyscreens on the inside, where they would slide open on a wooden beading in the sill but they were a bit cumbersome to move around every time you wanted to open the window so we took them out, but we had security screens to install the flyscreen into instead with handholes. Super easy to use and I doubt a cat would ever get past it. You need to figure out how you are going to attach the flyscreen mostly (in my old house, they used a particular wood beading in some places to attach it directly to the wooden window frame so that's one option, others may have other ideas on how it could be done. Re: Fly screens for casement windows 3Nov 23, 2015 3:34 pm Hmmm. I honestly don't know. The window frames appear to be aluminium, the same as the sliding balcony door frame. Ideally, we would want the screens to be fixed all the time. I don't want my cats hurling themselves out the windows while we're trying to open them! lol Re: Fly screens for casement windows 4Nov 23, 2015 3:49 pm If you have aluminium ones they should have the channels to fit flyscreen, it's a super easy diy job, nothing techinical about it at all. You can just buy the flyscreen at bunnings (don't get the plastic one because it sags and is useless, get the metal one in black), and some of the rubber stuff to fit the screen into the channel, plus some hand holes (they come in a little kit with knife and instructions). It won't cost much at all if you do it yourself. Re: Fly screens for casement windows 6Dec 31, 2015 5:26 pm Yes..I have installed casement windows in my reading room. Canglow windows done that for us. I too have put magnetic fly screens on them .It is a better choice for keeping your house insect totally free, even though allowing the refreshing air in. Magnetic fly screens are allow easy access to open and close windows. They are almost invisible, and does not interfere or obstruct the view from outside Re: Fly screens for casement windows 7Jan 01, 2016 6:51 am JB1 Sounds like you have awning windows.
