Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Nov 08, 2015 2:37 pm We are building a 250m2 (26.99sq) home. House is going to be 50m from hwy out front (country town so not like a busy city hwy!). We were quoted just over $5000 for double glazing. Would we be crazy not to get double glazing? Neighbour commented today the road gets noisy but they are used to it. We've already signed building contract so not sure how much of a headache it will cause to get doubke glazing. Those that have it, have you seen the benefits? Re: Double glazing 2Nov 12, 2015 1:17 pm Didn't get any responses from my post but we decided to ahead with double glazing. I think it should pay itself off. Re: Double glazing 3Nov 13, 2015 9:42 am Hi I just saw your post. When you ordered the double glazing did you tell them it was for noise reduction purposes? I think the gap between the glass panels is wider for noise than for thermal comfort. Re: Double glazing 4Nov 13, 2015 10:43 am No we didn't. We just asked for a quote for double glazing and there were no other questions asked by them when we were given quote. I am clueless with this! Re: Double glazing 5Nov 13, 2015 11:29 am I don't think the amount of variation in gap that you can get in standard double glazed units would make a lot of difference for noise. Whether 8mm, 10mm or 14mm it isn't too much different from the combined thickness of glass. Where it starts making difference is when you get it out to more like 100mm between the panes, but doing this requires a different construction than a standard double glazed window, and you lose more of the thermal benefits. It can't hurt to have them know that noise reduction is an aim you have though. Re: Double glazing 6Nov 13, 2015 11:55 am onejohn is correct the noise reduction comes from the tight seal. I think you should look at tilt and turn rather than sliding as the seal is better. Also you should make sure the aluminium is thermally broken. I just finished getting the double glazed alu windows in my build and they are simply amazing. Mine are German design but assembled in Poland I think and come with 10 year warranty as well. Outstanding quality and am very happy with everything about them. Service has also been great from the company too. Thanks Re: Double glazing 8Mar 05, 2016 2:17 pm AussieMark- could you tell me the name of the company you used for double glazing please? Re: Double glazing 13Jun 07, 2016 9:49 pm We are loving our double glazing, so glad we got it! The house keeps its warmth really well and when the sun hits back windows it heats the house up. We don't notice road noise either. Re: Double glazing 14Jun 15, 2016 2:00 pm we have double glazing too, best thing in the house. It adds a comfort level you cannot have with a 3mm glass pane between you and the outside. Australia is really behind the rest of the western world when it comes to insulation and energy reduction. It's quiet in the house. This is one of the reasons I decided to go overseas for my double glazed windows.
